Irving Plaza Shooting: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Multiple people have been wounded after a shooting took place during a T.I. concert in Irving Plaza in New York City. The gunfire was first reported at around 10 p.m. on May 25. There were over 1,000 people in the venue when the shots rang out just outside the building. The famed concert hall is located at 17 Irving Place close to Union Square in Manhattan.

Here’s what we know so far:


1. A Man Was Shot in the Leg & a Woman Was Shot in the Chest

A man was shot in the leg and a woman was shot in the chest, reports PIX 11. While ABC New York reports that three people were wounded. That number was later upgraded to four people in an NYPD statement.

One of those wounded has life-threatening injuries, reports CBS New York. Reporter Kemberley Richardson with ABC New York reported that one of the victims was “extremely critical.” NBC New York says the one of the victims walked to the nearby NYU hospital.

All of the victims are being treated at Bellevue Hospital.


2. A Major Police Mobilization Has Been Ordered at the Venue

Pictures posted to social media by concert goers show the massive police presence at the scene. Also performing at the concert were the Brooklyn-based. Flatbush Zombies.


The violence took place before T.I. took to the stage, reports the New York Daily News.


3. The Suspects Are Still at Large

No arrests have been made in the shooting, reports CBS New York. No motive for the shooting has been made public at this point.


4. Prior to the Shooting, T.I. Appeared on ‘The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon’

A few hours before the shooting, T.I. appeared on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon in a performance with rappers Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals.

Tweets that Paak sent after the shooting seem to indicate he was at the concert:


5. There Was a Fatal Shooting at the After Party of a T.I. Concert in Ohio in 2006


One of T.I.’s friends, Philant Johnson, was shot dead at the after party for one of the rapper’s shows in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2006. T.I. testified at the trial of Hosea Thomas, the man accused of the shooting, reported the Cincinnati Enquirer. He was sentenced to 66 years in prison for his role in the killing.

T.I. would later dedicate the songs “Live in the Sky” and “Dead and Gone” to Philant Johnson.
