WATCH: Michelle Obama’s Democratic National Convention Speech

Michelle Obama received a standing ovation after she spoke during the first night of the Democratic National Convention, in an evening headlined by the party’s biggest names.

The First Lady’s speech centered around children, and the how the president of the United States impacts their future.

“In this election and every election, is about who will have the power to shape out children for the next four or eight years of their lives, ” she told a cheering crowd.

“And I am here tonight because in this election, there is only one person who I trust with that responsibility. Only one person who I believe is truly qualified to be president of the United States, and that is our friend, Hillary Clinton.”

Obama also spoke of how she and President Obama have taught their daughters to handle “hateful” rhetoric.

“We challenge them to ignore those who challenge their father’s citizenship or faith. How we insist that the hateful language from public figures on television does not represent the true nature of this country. How we explain when someone is cruel or act like a bully, you don’t stoop to that level,” Obama said. “No, our motto is: When they go low, we go high.”

Although she never called Donald Trump out by name, she made comments directed against the GOP nominee.

“I want a president with a record of public service,” Obama said. “Someone who’s life’s work shows our children that we don’t chase fame and fortune for ourselves, we fight to give everyone a chance to succeed.”

She concluded the speech saying, “Don’t let anyone tell you this country isn’t great, that somehow we need to make it great again. Because this right now, this is the greatest country on earth.”
