PetPlate on ‘Shark Tank’: A Look Inside the Dog Food Delivery Service

PetPlate entered the Shark Tank in Season 8 with its food delivery service for dogs with selections like Oven-Roasted Turkey and Farmhouse Beef. They pride themselves in making healthy and nutritious meals for your canine, with recipes formulated by a veterinary clinical nutritionist from Cornell.

The Brooklyn-based company used to only serve the Northeast region of the country. However, starting today, December 2, it is expanding to the entire nation. As for the future of PetPlate, they are also looking to cater to cats soon.

We interviewed founder Renaldo Webb, who said, “In 2017, we plan to launch pre-portioned meals for cats, as well as a variety of tasty treats for both dogs and cats. We will also be offering meal plans that target specific therapeutic areas. Our ultimate goal is to enable millions of pet parents to serve their pets real food every day.”

Here’s what else he told us about…

How the Idea Came About

Prior to PetPlate, I spent time as a management consultant in pet food manufacturing facilities, where I learned first-hand about the inferior ingredients that go into traditional pet food, and I thought, “There has to be a better way.” So I set out to reinvent the way we nourish our pets.

How it Works

It’s easy. Log onto Petplate.com, create an account, select your dog’s meals, and watch them go crazy when you get your delivery! Skip or cancel anytime. It’s very similar to popular meal plans like Blue Apron.

Pros & Cons to Running a Business in Brooklyn

The pros are that the energy is terrific and there are a lot of resources for startup companies in the food
space, and there is a lot of great talent. I can’t think of any cons.

Feedback From Customers

They love PetPlate. They love the ease and convenience of being able to serve their pets real food made with quality ingredients that are nutritionally balanced. They also love turning mealtime into an experience with their pets. Most dogs recognize the box is for them and start to get really excited!

How His Appearance on the ‘Tank’ Came About

Once I realized I was onto something with PetPlate, I needed to raise growth capital and thought the
Sharks could help, and was eventually selected to make my pitch on the show.
