ISIS claimed responsibility for the terror attack in Paris, France that left a police officer dead along the Champs-Elysees after an attacker with an automatic weapon ambushed a police vehicle.

Amaq, the news agency for ISIS, claimed the attack on the famous Parisian promenade, according to SITE Intel Group, which monitors terrorist organizations.

“Through ‘Amaq, #ISIS claimed the attack on French police on Champs-Élysées in #Paris #France, identified attacker as Abu Yusuf al-Beljiki,” wrote SITE Intel Group on Twitter. A source told CNN the attacker was known to authorities for “radical Islamist activities.”

According to CNN, the gunman “was the subject of a ‘Fiche S’ surveillance file and was on the radar of the French domestic security service DGSI.”

The attack in Paris comes as Europe has been rocked with a series of terrorist attacks, many claimed by ISIS, ranging from Paris to Nice to Berlin to Stockholm.

According to Reuters, the attack injured multiple police officers and injured one.

One police officer was “killed on the spot by the attacker” and two other police officers were seriously injured, reported Reuters.

It was previously reported that the second officer had died, but that was not the case, reported Reuters.

“An automatic weapon was used against police, a weapon of war,” a French government official, Pierre-Henry Brandet, said, according to Reuters.

The gunman was killed at the scene. According to CNN, “a man emerged from the car and opened fire on the (police_ van with an ‘automatic weapon,’ killing one officer instantly” and the suspect “then ran away, managing to shoot and wound two other policemen. Other policemen engaged and shot and killed the attacker.”

The shooting came almost on the eve of the French presidential election and, CNN noted, it shut down the busy commerce street that is one of the most famous in the world. The attack occurred at 9 p.m. Paris time.

Police had not formally identified the attacker.
