The Most Misspelled Words By State, According to Google

In today’s day and age, most people have the autocorrect feature on their smart phones to thank for correctly spelling words.

But for many others, the inability to spell words correctly can be especially troublesome. That’s become abundantly clear with a new list of commonly misspelled words released by Google Trends on Tuesday.

The list of words was released by the company in advance of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which is being held this week in Washington D.C.

Google’s list breaks down the most common misspellings by state, and some of the results are a bit surprising.

For example, Wisconsin’s most-misspelled word? It’s “Wisconsin.” That’s right, the name of the state itself is its most commonly misspelled word. But that shouldn’t be too surprising, as 10 cities in Wisconsin make up the country’s “20 drunkest cities,” according to 24/7 Wall Street.

However, WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee has since reported that Wisconsin’s actual most misspelled word is “tomorrow,” as it appears that Google “forgot to remove the label from the map when they were making it.”

There are also a few states that share the same misspelling, with the most common one from coast-to-coast being “beautiful.” Clearly some people haven’t taken the tip provided by actor Jim Carrey in the movie Bruce Almighty.

Another one of the most common misspellings across the nation is the word “pneumonia,” which is understandable.

Some words seem easier to spell than others, though. “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” was the most commonly misspelled in West Virginia and Connecticut, which was easily the longest word on the list.

There are some other rather disturbing trends on the list. It seems that some folks in Mississippi are unaware of how to spell the word “nanny,” as that was the state’s top misspelled term in the state. Residents of New Hampshire misspelled “diarrhea” the most, while those in Rhode Island seem unaware of how to spell the word “liar.”

Though spelling words correctly can be pretty difficult for just about everyone. And Google Trends is guilty of doing just that.

In its first tweet revealing the 2017 list, the company misspelled the word “ninety” as Maryland’s top misspelling. It settled for “nintey” instead on the original map, but came out later with a corrected one.
