Bears vs Raiders Preview

Rookie quarterback Justin Fields claimed his first career victory last week. Days later, he took the top spot on the Bears’ depth chart.

Making his second straight start for the injured Andy Dalton, the 11th overall pick of this year’s draft completed 11 of 17 passes for 209 yards and a pick in a 24-14 home victory over the Detroit Lions that pushed Chicago to 2-2.

Though Dalton is expected to be ready to go against Las Vegas, head coach Matt Nagy told both quarterbacks on Tuesday that Fields will be the starter going forward.

“It is a big decision, but we feel very good about it and are looking forward to it,” Nagy said, according to ESPN.

Fields struggled in his first career start, completing just 6 of 20 passes for 68 yards in a 26-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns a week earlier. Offensive coordinator Bill Lazor took over play-calling duties ahead of Week 4; Nagy called plays in the team’s first three games.

“It was definitely good news to hear,” Fields said of his promotion, per ESPN.

“I would say I was a little bit surprised, but I mean, not really crazy surprised. But definitely a little bit of surprise. I feel like he was pretty straightforward with me and Andy. And I think my teammates believe in me, so just grateful for the opportunity and just trying to get ready to work.”

The Raiders opened their campaign with three consecutive victories before falling to the Los Angeles Chargers 28-14 on the road on Monday.

Las Vegas came up empty on eight first-half possessions — punting six times, turning it over on downs once, and kneeling as the second quarter expired — to trail 21-0 at the midway break.

“We cannot come out and take that many punches in the first round,” Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said, according to The Associated Press. “We found a way to make it a football game and give ourselves a chance, but it’s just too hard in this league against good teams.”

Quarterback Derek Carr got the Raiders back into the game in the third quarter, helming touchdown drives of 78 and 81 yards on the team’s first possessions of the second half, but his interception with just over three minutes remaining effectively iced things.

Carr completed 21 of 34 passes for a pair of scores and just 196 yards as the team sputtered to 48 rushing yards on 18 carries.

“If anything, hopefully this wakes us up a little bit,” Carr said, per AP. “I think we need to start a lot faster, if I’m honest. We started the season great, but we don’t start games nearly good enough yet.”
