Are Google & Gmail Down? 502 Error & Other Issues Reported

A number of people are reporting a possible Google outage, with many saying that they are receiving a 502 Error when trying to use some of Google’s services. The problems are widespread and affecting a number of Google services, including Gmail for some people. Not everyone is affected, and the good news is that some people who were affected are reporting as of 10 p.m. Eastern that their Google services are starting to work again. Google itself, however, has said there are still issues with its Cloud services.

According to Down Detector, a large spike in issues was reported with Google itself around 9 p.m. Eastern.

A spike in issues was also reported on Down Detector with Google Drive, Gmail, Google Hangouts, Google Play, Nest, YouTube, and other services owned by Google.

Google Acknowledged a Problem with Its Cloud Services

Google Cloud Platform’s status page currently notes that there are issues as of 9:45 p.m. Eastern. The webpage reads: “September 24, 2020 Multiple services reporting issues.”

Earlier, this message was on the Google Cloud Status Dashboard: “We are currently mitigating an issue with Dataflow SQL queries that write to a PubSub topic that doesn’t already have a schema set in Data Catalog will fail. Users can mitigate by making sure their output topic has a compatible schema set in Data Catalog before running the query. The directions are published in this document.”

At 10 p.m. Eastern, the page was updated. It now reads: “We are currently investigating an issue affecting multiple Cloud services.”

The webpage updating details about the Cloud issue notes that the problems began at 18:25 Pacific (6:25 p.m. Pacific.)

Google wrote at 6:46 p.m. Pacific (9:46 p.m. Eastern):

Description: We are experiencing an issue with multiple GCP products, beginning at Thursday, 2020-09-24 17:58 US/Pacific.

Symptoms: Increased error rate.

Affected products include: Cloud Run, Firestore Watch, Cloud SQL, Cloud Spanner, GKE, Cloud Logging, Cloud Monitoring, Cloud Console

Our engineering team continues to investigate the issue.

We will provide an update by Thursday, 2020-09-24 19:30 US/Pacific with current details.

At 9:28 p.m. Eastern they wrote:

At 10:05 p.m. Eastern, Google posted another update:

Description: We are experiencing an issue with multiple GCP products, beginning at Thursday, 2020-09-24 17:58 US/Pacific.

Symptoms: Increased error rate.

Affected products include: Cloud Run, Firestore Watch, Cloud SQL, Cloud Spanner, GKE, Cloud Logging, Cloud Monitoring, Cloud Console, Cloud KMS, Game Server

The services marked as being affected on Google Cloud’s Status Dashboard include Cloud Run, Cloud Spanner, Google Cloud SQL, Google Kubernetes Engine, Google Cloud Console, and Google Cloud Infrastructure Components.
