49ers vs Cardinals Preview

The moment isn’t too big for 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance as he makes his first pro career start against the unbeaten Cardinals. Sunday’s matchup will pit two highly athletic young quarterbacks in Lance and Kyler Murray of the Cardinals on the same field.

Picked third by the 49ers in this year’s draft, Lance’s wait to start ended quickly when starting quarterback Jimmy Garropolo went down with an injury. In Lance’s brief playing time in the regular season, he already has three touchdown passes on 10 completions and a rushing touchdown on three carries.

He will just have to solve a Cardinals defense that allows 21.3 points per game and just made the Los Angeles Rams’ high-flying offense look mortal. Lance will also have to keep away from Cardinals linebacker Chandler Jones, who has five sacks and five tackles for loss already.

“I feel very prepared,” Lance said on Oct. 8 according to the Associated Press. “I really do. It’s a credit to the coaching staff and the guys around me. Those guys made me feel really confident this week and I feel confident in myself.”

Arizona can also handle the 49ers putting up points. The Cardinals boast the most explosive offense in the NFL so far with 35 points per game and 440.5 yards per game.

Murray has 1,273 yards passing, nine touchdowns, and a 76.1% completion rate. He also has 109 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

A.J. Green, Christian Kirk, Deandre Hopkins, and Rondale Moore all have eclipsed the 200-yard mark in receiving. Tight end Maxx Williams and running back Chase Edmonds likewise make plays the passing game as both have 15 or more receptions.

San Francisco hasn’t dominated on defense, only holding one team below 21 points this season. However, the 49ers still have Nick Bosa, who has another strong season going with four sacks and six tackles for loss. Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley has made plays in the secondary with four pass deflections.
