Ole Miss — 7-0-17-7 — 31

Ole Miss isn’t going to the College Football Playoff, but neither is Mississippi State, and the latter is reason enough to celebrate Saturday night in Oxford.

The Rebels, who had hopes themselves earlier this year of competing for a national title, fell out of the College Football Playoff picture last week with a blowout loss to Arkansas.

But Ole Miss played the role of spoiler Saturday, beating the Bulldogs 31-17 in the Egg Bowl and denying State a shot at the SEC West title.

Check out the full box score here and read on for a recap.

Jaylen Walton Took it 91 Yards to the House for Ole Miss

Ole Miss was leading by 10 but stuck deep in its own territory when Jaylen Walton broke off one of the most spectacular touchdown runs of the year.

Walton took a pitch from Bo Wallace and switched directions near the line of scrimmage before breaking away for a 91-yard touchdown that made it 24-10 Rebels with 2:13 left in the third quarter and put State’s playoff hopes on life support.

State responded when Dak Prescott hit De’Runnya Wilson on a 32-yard touchdown pass that made it 24-17 with 13:58 left in the game, but the Rebels extended their lead again when freshman running back Jordan Williams threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Cody Core to make it 31-17 Rebels and all but ice it with 9:14 left in the game.

Dak Prescott Gave MSU the Lead, but Ole Miss Took it Right Back

The Ole Miss defense held Mississippi State without a touchdown for the game’s first 35 minutes. But Dak Prescott engineered a 9-play, 62-yard drive that he capped off with a 1-yard touchdown on a quarterback keeper that made it 10-7 State with 9:37 left in the third quarter.

The lead, though, didn’t last long.

On the Rebels’ ensuing drive, Bo Wallace hit Evan Engram for an 82-yard gain down the middle of the field, setting up a Jeremy Liggins 1-yard touchdown run that made it 14-10 Ole Miss with 8:08 left in the quarter.

The Rebels extended their lead to 17-10 when Gary Wunderlich kicked a 39-yard field goal with 3:37 left in the third quarter.

Bo Wallace Put Ole Miss on Top in the 1st Quarter

Bo Wallace cost the Rebels the chance to score a touchdown when his pass into the endzone was picked off by Taveze Calhoun on Ole Miss’ second possession.

But Wallace redeemed himself when he took it himself from a yard out to score the game’s first touchdown on Ole Miss’ next possession, putting the Rebels up 7-0 with 40 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs got on the board with 14:45 left in the second quarter, when Evan Sobiesk kicked a 45-yard field goal to make it 7-3.

The Egg Bowl is the biggest game on the respective schedules of Mississippi State and archrival Ole Miss even in ordinary years.

But this year has been anything but ordinary, and the stakes when the teams square off Saturday in Oxford will be even higher as a result.

Ole Miss is out of College Football Playoff contention after a blowout loss last week at Arkansas. But if Bo Wallace and Co. can’t compete for a national title themselves, the 19th-ranked Rebels might as well spoil things for the fourth-ranked Bulldogs, who are clinging to the final spot in the playoff picture.

A win and an Alabama loss to Auburn would give Mississippi State the SEC West title and a spot in the conference title game. A loss would likely prompt the committee to drop Dak Prescott and Co. out of the top 4, making way for TCU or Ohio State to move into the picture.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. Eastern, with TV coverage on CBS. Keep it here for live updates throughout the game.
