Seeking their first men’s basketball gold medal at the Pan American Games since 1983, the United States turned to its veterans in the first game of the tournament.
In the opener against Venezuela, the Americans struggled to find any offensive rhythm in the first half, slipping into a 41-33 deficit at the break. But head coach Mark Few made the right adjustments, turning to Damien Wilkins and Bobby Brown in the second half to roll to the 85-62 victory. Wilkins, the oldest player on the team, finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Next up for the US is Puerto Rico. The defending gold medalists, coached by Lousville’s Rick Pitino and led by point guard JJ Barea, fell into a 31-9 first-quarter deficit against Brazil and lost, 92-59. Another defeat against the United States, and they are all but finished. You can see the standings here.
