There’s some conflict between Chile and Uruguay. It’s pretty easy to put your finger on the source.
It was Chilean Gonazlo Jara’s finger, specifically, that caused an uproar the last time these teams met. In the Copa America Quarterfinal, Jara poked Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani in the backside then fell down, causing controversy that ended with Jara retroactively suspended for the tournament. Chile eliminated Uruguay with the 1-0 victory.
Chile went on to win Copa America, and neither team has slowed down since. Both have had strong performances to start World Cup Qualifying, although both squads failed to win in their appearances last week. And while there is admittedly bad blood between them, both teams have committed to keeping it civil.
Tuesday will be a meeting of CONMENBOL’s best. Chile and Uruguay trail only Ecuador in the table, and the teams have combined to score 13 goals in their six combined qualifiers.
