The Royals did it again.
Down two runs in the ninth inning of Game 5, Kansas City found yet another way to scrape its way back into the game. To start things after, the Royals chased Matt Harvey, who had been flawless through eight innings and begged Terry Collins to let him pitch the ninth, with a Lorenzo Cain walk and Eric Hosmer RBI double.
After Hosmer advanced to third on a Mike Moustakas ground ball, Jeurys Familia induced another grounder from Salvador Perez. David Wright went to first base for the second out of the inning, and Lucas Duda had a chance to get Hosmer at the plate to send things to Game 6, but Hosmer’s aggressive base-running paid off as Duda’s throw was off line.
Anything close would have had Hosmer by quite some distance:
Alas, Game 5 went to extra innings, and the Royals went to win, 7-2, to win their first World Series in 30 years.
