It might have required more than the regulation 90 minutes, but City won their second League Cup in dramatic fashion.

After not fielding a shot in the first half, backup keeper Willy Caballero had plenty of chances to prove he belonged in the first team. While critics chided Pellegrini for not going with stalwart Joe Hart in a Cup final, the Chilean stayed with Caballero and was rewarded for his confidence.

Caballero made three saves in the penalty shootout, assuring the win for Manchester City. The Argentine also made several key saves in extra time, when Liverpool really poured on the final attack.

After a scoreless first half, City got the scoring started early in the second when Fernandinho’s shot went through the open legs of Simon Mignolet. But Mignolet can’t be labeled the scapegoat in today’s action, as Mignolet recorded two massive saves on Sergio Aguergo to keep Liverpool in the contest.

Liverpool tied the match on Coutinho’s finish with less than ten minutes remaining, after struggling to finish throughout the contest. Liverpool controlled possession throughtout, but were frequently tested by the countering trio of Toure, Silva and Aguero.

It was a great contest between two teams, but one that should be quickly replaced in memory. These teams are scheduled to meet again in three days, as City look to chase table leaders Leicester with 12 games remaining on the league calendar.
