Willy Caballero is the hero for City, as the reserve keeper saved three shots in penalties to win Manchester City their second League Cup title.

Caballero has been the Cup keeper for Pellegrini and City, but the Chilean faced criticism throughout the week for sticking with Caballero in today’s match. He wasn’t tested often in this one, but made outstanding saves in extra time and was the hero in penalties.

It was Liverpool’s 12th appearance in a League Cup final, but Jurgen Klopp’s side couldn’t find their offensive form today. They controlled possession throughout, as City were content to play the counter through Toure, Silva and Aguero.

This matchup featured some high-scoring affairs in the past, but Liverpool went without any meaningful chances in the first half. City got the scoring started in the second, when Fernandinho’s low shot split the legs of Simon Mignolet. It was a poor effort from the Liverpool keeper, but Mignolet made up for it with two outstanding stops on Aguero.

Fernandinho got City’s shootout started on the wrong foot, as the Brazilian’s chance hit the post. But Caballero saved the day, saving three straight attempts to win the Cup for manager Pellegrini, who brought Caballero over from Malaga and now has his second Cup in his final season with the team.

Here’s how it went down:

Aguero is next…and calmly scores for City (2-1 Manchester City)

Lallana is Liverpool’s fourth…ANOTHER CABALLERO SAVE (2-1 Manchester City)

Yaya Toure for City now…HE SCORES!! CITY WIN THE LEAGUE CUP! (3-1)

City attempt a few set pieces before the final whistle but are unable to connect. Buckle up, the League Cup final is heading to penalties.

119′

Some contact after the whistle from both teams, as tensions are running high in extra time. Toure makes a great tackle on Lallana, who gets up and gets in the face of Toure. The pair scuffle before they are separated, and City win a free kick.

112′

Manchester City 1, Liverpool 1

Liverpool are by far the aggressors in extra time, while City have been content to counter. Liverpool have had all the chances after regulation, but City are still just one bouncing ball away from capitalizing and winning the Cup. The latest effort was a deep cross to Origi, who barely nicked it with his boot but did not rattle Caballero.

110′

Manchester City 1, Liverpool 1

Liverpool threaten again, but Caballero makes a huge save and Otamendi clears the danger. A foul shortly after gives Sturridge an open chance, but the bending shot doesn’t have enough pace to test Caballero. City use their last sub, to replace David Silva with Wilfried Bony.

105′

Manchester City 1, Liverpool 1

There have been three League Cup finals to go to penalties, and Liverpool has won two of them. City has won the other. 15 more minutes at Wembley.

Manchester City 1, Liverpool 1

Redemption for Mignolet! Aguero bursts through with combination play from Silva, but his final flick on goal was only barely turned away by Mignolet. The Liverpool keeper was dogged for poor keeping on City’s only goal, but he’s surely kept out two great efforts from Aguero today.

Two careless passes from City keep Liverpool in possession, and grant a corner. Origi battles Kompany just inside the box, but there’s no call and City eventually earn the goal kick.

91′

Manchester City 1, Liverpool 1

Liverpool are out of changes, but City is getting fresh bodies on the pitch before the start of extra time. Pablo Zabaleta will come on for Sagna, and Jesus Navas brings some offensive pop in place of Fernando.

END OF REGULATION

Manchester City 1, Liverpool 1

A clearance from Sagna proves to be the final moments of regulation, as the fans at Wembley will be treated to another 30 minutes of football.

90′

Manchester City 1, Liverpool 1

Four minutes of extra time will be added. City have had plenty of chances in the second half, but their one goal is not good enough to put away Liverpool. Raheem Sterling’s two misses stand out in particular, but chances from Toure and Fernando also could’ve made the difference in regulation.

87′

Manchester City 1, Liverpool 1

Chances at both ends in the final minutes! First, a cross leaves Fernando with a point-blank attempt on Mignolet, but the midfielder blasts it into the keeper’s waiting arms. Jordan Henderson had a powerful strike at the other end that caught a deflection, but Caballero adjusted and was in position to make the save.

GOAL!

Manchester City 1, Liverpool 1

TIE GAME!!!! COUTINHO!!

Sturridge sends a cross through the City defense for Lallana, whose short effort bangs off the post. Fortunately for Liverpool the deflection came right to Coutinho, who resumed his role as City killer. City now need to get back on the ball, after killing the clock for the better part of 20 minutes.

79′

Manchester City 1, Liverpool 0

Another poor miss from Sterling. The England international can’t put the nail in his former club’s coffin, as he mishits a close-range attempt for the second time tonight. Less than ten minutes left!

77′

Manchester City 1, Liverpool 0

Good movement but no shot from Liverpool. Sturridge led Milner into the box with a great ball, but a low cross attempt by Milner was blocked and cleared. Sturridge looked upset Milner didn’t shoot on that one, as time is running out on Liverpool.

71′

Manchester City 1, Liverpool 0

Adam Lallana comes on for Moreno, as Liverpool ramp up the pressure with just one substitution remaining. City have spent all day countering Liverpool, and the Reds will be more susceptible to the break as they ramp it up in the final minutes.

60′

Manchester City 1, Liverpool 0

Another big chance for City goes begging, as Aguero was in front of the Liverpool defense on goal. With the Argentine streaking towards his net, Moreno made a desperate attempt to regain possession, and knocked Aguero off the ball without a whistle from the ref. A lucky tackle from Moreno, who almost surely should’ve been called for a penalty on the tackle.

Terrible miss for City! City go on the counter, as Toure fed it through to David Silva in space. City looked sure to score, but Sterling was unable to control the final pass and missed wide on what would have been a sweet goal for the former Red.

Chance for Liverpool, but Milner’s chance soars over the City goal. Liverpool are still doing all the passing, but have yet to seriously test Willy Caballero today.

HALFTIME

Manchester City 0, Liverpool 0

In a matchup that has seen tons of goals in recent meetings, these squads are scoreless at the break. The biggest action came from Sergio Aguero, who put Sakho on iceskates only to see Mignolet push his shot off the post and out. Sakho has since been replaced by Toure, but Liverpool had the better of the chances since the substitution.

36′

Manchester City 0, Liverpool 0

Phillipe Coutinho was Livepool’s dangerman when these teams met in November, and he looks equally dangerous today. More good combination play between him and Sturridge, but the back post volley is off target for Liverpool.

36′

Manchester City 0, Liverpool 0

Neither team wants to go to the break scoreless, and both teams have had chances with ten minutes left until halftime. Liverpool thought they deserved a penalty after Suttridge was fouled by Fernandinho just outside the penalty area. City responded and took a few corners at the other end, but were unable to break the tie.

23′

Manchester City 0, Liverpool 0

City takes the first major chance of the match but are unable to convert. Aguero found space after Sakho lost his footing, but the shot was only barley pushed away by Mignolet
