WWE Payback 2016: The Results & Highlights You Need to Know


Now that WrestleMania 32 is in the books, it’s time to move onto the next state of affairs in the WWE.

Over the past few weeks, NXT regulars have gotten called up to the main roster. New #1 contenders have been decided. Championship titles have changed hands. With all that in mind, it’s time for everything to come to a head at WWE Payback 2016. AJ Styles will clash with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship Roman Reigns. Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens will bring their longtime feud to the main WWE PPV stage. And a new tag team will fight to become the #1 contenders for The New Day’s WWE World Tag Team Championship. There’s so much to enjoy as we all check out this WWE PPV card full of 1st-time matchups.

Once Payback 2016 eventually gets underway (check out the links below to find out when), we’ll have all the results and highlights you need to know.



Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin

Winner: Dolph Ziggler!

Highlights: After some jaw jacking between both men, Corbin and Ziggler got into an intense struggle. Corbin brought Ziggler down after throwing him chest first into the corner ring post. Corbin then got as brutal as possible by sliding outside the ring and laying in a solid right hand to Ziggler as he laid atop the bottom rope. Corbin continued to strike Ziggler down as the crowd went wild for Ziggler. Ziggler tried making a quick comeback, but Corbin laid him out by dropping his neck right atop the ropes. Corbin then went right back to beating down Ziggler by flinging him right back into the same corner ring post.

Corbin then locked Ziggler into a half-nelson chinlock. Ziggler rued everything in his power to escape. He laid in a nice headbutt and then a sleeper hold on the big man as the match wore on. Corbin backed up into the corner to get Ziggler off his back. Ziggler held on for a bit longer, got thrown off and then dropped Corbin with his Fame-Asser. On the outside of the ring, Ziggler went airborne but got taken out with a Big Boot counter. Corbin then flung Ziggler face first into the steel ring post. Before he re-entered the ring, Corbin taunted the booing audience. Back in the ring, Corbin got shocked with a quick-roll up pin by Ziggler.


Kalisto (c) vs. Ryback (WWE United States Championship)

Winner: And still the WWE United States Champion, Kalisto!

Highlights: Ryback threw some dirt on the Chicago fans and their hometown savior CM Punk by mimicking his entrance. Ryback wasted no time toying with his much smaller opponent. Kalisto stomped on the big man’s feet to get him off, which led to Ryback hitting the ropes and dropping Kalisto with a shoulder push. Kalisto then got the upper hand by hitting Ryback with a Monkey Toss, a dive through the middle rope and a plancha over the top rope. After all this offense, Ryback shook it off and threw Kalisto into the corner. Kalisto managed to catch Ryback off-guard with a quick hop onto him, but Ryback took hold of the little man and suplexed him.

Ryback then worked over Kalisto with a sleeper hold. Kalisto escaped but then got caught with a quick elbow strike. The action stayed in Ryback’s favor until Kalisto caught him with a nice Tornado DDT. Both men then ended up on the outside ring apron. A struggle ensued, but then Kalisto got in a good counter with a spinning DDT on the ring apron. Back inside the ring, Kalisto pulled off his best comeback moveset on the big guy. Kalisto looked to land his finisher, but Ryback almost countered it into his finisher. Kalisto escaped but then got dropped down hard with a Spinebuster.

Ryback tried to land something big off the top rope, but Kalisto put a stop to that with two nice side kicks. Ryback recovered and then dropped Kalisto with a top rope Gorilla Press Slam. Ryback then tried to flatten Ryback with a big splash, but Ryback dodged it and finished Ryback with his Salina Del Sol.


Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady vs. The Vaudevillains (Aiden English and Simon Gotch) (Tag Team Match to Determine the #1 Contender for the WWE Tag Team Championship)

Winners: No one…

Highlights: The New Day arrived and made some funny references to Beyonce and her newly released Lemonade album. And as expected, the crowd adored it all. They decided to sit ringside for this tag team encounter. Enzo and Cass pulled off their pre-match promo (Enzo hilariously dropped his live mic, but picked it up in due time). Enzo and Simon began the match with some lock up exchanges. Enzo ended up dropkicking Simon, who decided to tag in Aiden.

Aiden soon had to contend with the newly tagged in Cass. Cass got in some nice chops and then tagged in Enzo to land some strikes of his own. Cass and Enzo then dropped both their opponents with some efficient tag team maneuvers. Enzo ran full speed ahead at Aiden, but he paid for it by getting hit with Aiden’s feet. Enzo then got punished after getting thrown face first into the middle rope. Medical personnel got called in soon after to tend to Enzo, who was knocked out. Sadly, the match got called off…



Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens

Winner: Kevin Owens!

Highlights: “OLE!” chants sprung out as Sami Zayn made his entrance. Zayn and Owens then struck each other with some stiff forearms to start the match. Zayn threw Owens to the outside and immediately put him down with a plancha to the outside. Zayn kept up the punishment on Owens by flinging him into the crowd barrier. Back in the ring, Owens laid Zayn’s neck over the top rope. Owens wasn’t able to capitalize though since Zayn put him down with a jumping Calf Kick. Zany got in a nice hurricanrana on Owens to throw him even more off balance. The match got even more violent as Owens later on got the heads up on Zayn. Owens threw Zayn right into the steel ring steps on the outside several times. Owens then put his rival back in the ring, taunted him relentlessly and beat him down with several strikes.

Owens worked on Zayn’s mid-section by suplexing him onto the top rope and then landing his Running Senton Splash right after. Zayn started fighting back with forearms, but Owens dropped him with a quick elbow drop. Zayn got right back to his feet and clotheslined Owens. Zayn got into his 2nd gear after hitting Owens with another clothesline and several punches. Owens kicked Zayn away from him, but then he got dropped hard with a Michinoku Driver. Soon after, the match got even crazier as Zayn hit his Blue Thunder Bomb on Owens. Owens shook off all the big moves done to him and hit his unique neckbreaker on Zayn, He followed that up quickly with a nice Frog Splash. Zayn continued to hang on, however.

Owens clotheslined Zayn in the corner and then went for two Cannonball Splashes. Owens then for his his finisher, but Zayn got pushed into the air for a dropkick counter. Zayn then landed another suplex on Owens, but Owens got right back up to land a big Lariat on Zayn. The crowd went wild as both men fought to get back to their feet. Once they did, both men landed right hands on each other simultaneously. Zayn almost got a quick roll-up pin, but Owens escaped. Zayn went up top for his his Tornado DDT, but Owens dropped Zayn right on his back into his knee. Both men ended up fighting on the ring apron and struck each other wildly. Owens looked to Powerbomb Zayn, but Zayn flipped him right onto the steel ring bracers.

Zayn then made the crowd come even more unglued after his his his Tornado DDT through the ring post on Owens. Zayn went for his finisher, but Owens cut him off with a Superkick and then won the match with his Pop Up Powerbomb. After the bell rang, Owens slapped Zayn and threw him right out of the ring. He then demanded that Byron Saxton interview him. He crapped all over Zayn and promised to get back his IC Championship. Owens chose to do guest commentary for the upcoming IC Title match.

The Miz (c) (with Maryse) vs. Cesaro (WWE Intercontinental Championship)

Winner: And still the WWE Intercontinental Champion, The Miz!

Highlights: While Owens talked all types of junk on the outside, Cesaro and Miz locked up. While Miz had Cesaro in an armlock, Cesaro hit his kip-up several times and got the advantage. Miz got manhandled soon after with Gutwrench Suplexes, a Tilt-a-Whirl backbreaker and a dropkick while he was on the top rope. Cesaro went to suplex Miz, but Maryse held onto Miz’s legs to save him. Miz used that opportunity to work over Cesaro’s still weakened shoulder with strikes,a suplex and a submission. Cesaro tried to fight back, but Miz brought him back down with his neckbreaker combo maneuver. Miz continued to work over Cesaro, but he almost got pinned by Cesaro at one point.

Miz escaped and locked in a sleeper hold on Cesaro right after. Miz locked his legs around Cesaro and kept his submission locked in for a good while. Cesaro powered out later on and suplexed Miz hard to the mat. Cesaro soon made a comeback with his European Uppercut’s over and over. Miz ate several of them as he got thrown into each ring corner. Soon after, Cesaro hit the ropes and planted his feet in Miz’s face with a beautiful dropkick. Miz ended up the top rope and then got suplexed by Cesaro into the ring from the ring apron.

As the match wore on, Cesaro dodged a boot from Miz and put him down with a jumping European Uppercut. Cesaro almost went for his Big Swing, but Miz kicked him tried hitting his DDT. Miz got dropped with another European Uppercut, but he somehow survived. Miz kept on fighting and actually managed to hit his Skull Crushing Finale on Cesaro. While both men were laid out, Zayn came back out to brawl with Owens. Back in he ring, Cesaro swung Miz around for 20 dizzying rotations. Cesaro then locked in a Crossface, but the ref got distracted by Zayn and Owens fighting. Miz tapped out, but the ref missed it. Cesaro knocked Zayn and Owens off the ring apron, but Miz rolled up Cesaro with a quick pin. After the bell rang, a very angry Cesaro hit his Neutralizer on Miz. Owens then showed up to hit Cesaro, then he hit Zayn with another Pop Up Powerbomb. Owens then set his sight on Miz’s IC Title and then almost laid Miz out. Maryse saved him before hie could get hit with a Pop Up Powerbomb. Owens held up the IC Championship as the crowd cheered on.


Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho

Winner: Dean Ambrose!

Highlights: Jericho berated Ambrose while the crowd roared on. Ambrose ran right at Y2J and got in some nice strikes and chops as the match began. Y2J ran out of the ring, which caused Ambrose to give chase. Y2J then got dropped as soon as he Ambrose got a hold of him again. Y2J finally got the upper hand after he threw Ambrose outside the ring and followed it up with a sliding dropkick. Ambrose got flung onto the ring apron, but the he responded by spinning into a Rebound Lariat to Jericho. Back to the inside of the ring, Y2J sought some aid from the ref by grabbing onto him. After Ambrose grabbed him, both men exchanged some counters before Y2J suplexed Ambrose’s guts onto the top rope.

Y2J then took control by landing a nice dropkick on Ambrose and working over his back. Y2J remained in control for a good while until he went for a Facebuster and got shoved groin first into the ring corner. Ambrose then made a comeback with his signature offense. Y2J got dropped right on his skull with a nice Tornado DDT. Y2J almost got thrown over the top rope at one point, but Jericho managed to get to the top rope to land a Double Axe Handle on Ambrose. Y2J then went for his Walls of Jericho, but Ambrose spun him around and landed a nice Neckbreaker.

Ambrose got his 2nd wind and then landed a nice elbow strike into the corner that was followed up with a Running Bulldog on Y2J. Ambrose went for a top rope move, but Y2J caught him slipping and locked him into his finishing submission. Ambrose fought for dear life as Y2J held on tightly. Ambrose finally escaped, which caused Jericho to hit Ambrose with knee strikes. Ambrose soon recovered and forced Y2J to the outside, which was followed by Ambrose launching himself through the middle ropes onto Jericho. Ambrose then cleared off one of the announce tables and put Y2J atop it. Ambrose looked for Dirty Deeds, but Y2J countered and almost locked him in the Walls of Jericho again. Y2J decided to catapult Ambrose into the ring carrier’s section.

Ambrose fought for dear life to get back into the ring. Once the match continued, Ambrose regained the upper hand after more of Y2J’S punishment. Ambrose landed his top rope elbow drop on Y2J, but only got a 2-count. Soon, both men started tagging each other while they were laid atop the top rope. Ambrose almost hit his Dirty Deeds to Y2J as he flew off the top rope, but Jericho escaped and locked in his Walls of Jericho for a 2nd time. Ambrose escaped once more, but Y2J hit him with his Backbreaker maneuver. Y2J then talked down to Ambrose for a while, but Ambrose fought valiantly and finally finished him with his Dirty Deeds. Jericho threw a fit after the final bell rang.


Charlotte (c) (with Ric Flair) vs. Natalya (with Bret Hart) (WWE Women’s Championship)

Winner: And still the WWE Women’s Champion, Charlotte!

Highlights: With both ladies’ legendary partners watching on the outside, this title match got underway. Natalya almost locked in her Sharpshooter on Charlotte early on, but she escaped. Charlotte yelled out her signature “WOO!” in Natalya’s face, which pissed her off and got her to get even more physical with the champ. Charlotte got pushed to the outside, which led to her getting in Bret’s face. Back on the inside, Charlotte got the better of Natalya with a quick neckbreaker. Charlotte then remained in control for several moments thereafter.

After a chopping contest between both women, Natalya started to make her comeback. Charlotte got dropped with a nice German Suplex by Natalya after some back and forth strikes. But soon, Charlotte cut her off before her comeback could truly get underway by working on her leg. Charlotte taunted Bret at ringside as she locked in a Single-Leg Crab on Natalya. Natalya fought back and then locked in a quick Armbar. Once Charlotte escaped, she continued injuring Natalya’s leg and even suplexed her leg into the bottom rope. Charlotte hopped to the top rope for a big move, but Natalya shoved her right off to the outside.

Natalya ended up getting locked onto Charlotte’s shoulder on the outside after she slid onto her neck. Natalya dropped her face first into the security mat with a Hurricanrana. Natalya tried to get herself back into good shape once again and land her Discus Clothesline, but Charlotte laid her down with a Big Boot. Charlotte then went for her big submission hold, but Natalya struck her off. Natalya finally got in her Discus Clothesline on Charlotte right after. Natalya almost locked in her submission hold, but Charlotte landed a big move right into her Natural Selection face plant finisher. Natalya managed to kick out afterwards, though.

Charlotte then went sky-high and splashed Natalya with a graceful Moonsault. Natalya still managed to hold on. Then Charlotte finally locked in her Figure-Four Leglock. Natalya sat in pain for several grueling moment before she reversed the hold and made Charlotte cringe in pain. Charlotte then did the unthinkable: she locked in the Sharpshooter on Natalya. All of a sudden, the final bell rang and Charlotte was awarded the victory. But here’s the kicker: Natalya never tapped out! A screwjob just went down in Chi-Town. After the match, Bret and Natalya locked in the Sharpshooter on Ric and Charlotte.

Roman Reigns (c) vs. AJ Styles (WWE World Heavyweight Championship)

Winner: And still the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Roman Reigns!

Highlights: The crowd cheered on AJ and crapped all over Reigns once the opening bell rang. During the initial lockup, Reigns shoved AJ into the ring corner. On the 2nd lockup exchange, AJ got in a nice side headlock but was unable to throw him over. Reigns threw him right into the ropes. On the 3rd lockup encounter, AJ got manhandled again but he got in a quick kick to Reigns’ leg. AJ went right back to striking Reigns with even more swift leg kicks. Reigns used his power to flip AJ over his back, but AJ got right back up and hit an armdrag on Reigns that sent him to the outside. Back in the ring, Reigns and AJ continually got in each other’s heads with mind games. Reigns chased AJ around, which led to Reigns catching even more kicks when he slid back into the ring. AJ got in a ton of strikes before he caught a powerful shoulder tackle from Reigns to the outside.

AJ regained his composure, got back into the ring and worked on Reigns with leg kicks. AJ tried to grab a leg, but Reigns clubbed him with a blow to the back of the neck. Both men began countering each other and laid in some nice strikes. Reigns got the better of AJ when he flatted him with a lethal Clothesline. Reigns got into gear afterwards when he used a roll-up pin maneuver to combo into a Powerbomb AJ. Reigns then landed a Sitdown Powerbomb on AJ soon after. Reigns went for his Superman Punch, but AJ stopped him in his tracks with an Enzuguri. AJ launched into his strike combo and then landed his Running Forearm strike on Reigns. AJ then hit his Fireman’s Carry Neckbreaker on Reigns, but could only manage to nab a 2-count. AJ chopped Reigns in the corner, but then got flipped over the to rope. Reigns caught a hopping AJ and tried to go for a Samoan Drop, but AJ countered by slipping out and locking in his Calf Crusher submission.

Reigns remained locked in for a few seconds before he finally escaped. Then in a crazy moment, AJ hit his Phenomenal Forearm to Reigns through the announce table on the outside. As both men fought to get back in the ring, the ref counted to 10 against Reigns. AJ got into the ring just in time to get the count-out victory. Reigns remains champion. All of a sudden, Shane O’Mac came out to restart the match with no count-out’s added on. AJ threw Reigns back in the ring and went to the top rope, but Reigns moved out of harm’s way. AJ came down and got into a big strike battle with Reigns that ended with his Pele Kick. AJ took the top rope again, but he landed right on Reigns’ knees during a 450 Splash attempt.

AJ went to the skies again, but came back down right into a gut punch from Reigns. But to the ref, it appeared to be a low blow. AJ Styles wins by disqualification. Reigns still remains champ. Then, Steph’s music hit. She restarted the match with No DQ rules. Reigns went for AJ, but he got hit with several elbow strikes. Reigns laid AJ on the top rope and struck him right to the outside. Reigns then punished AJ all over the outside of the ring and right into the crowd. AJ fought back by landing a Clothesline on Reigns over the security barrier and then landing a flying knee drop to the back of his on the announce table. AJ went for his Phenomenal Forearm, but he flew right into a Superman Punch. Somehow, AJ kicked out of a follow-up pin attempt. Reigns picked up AJ and hit him with another Superman Punch. Reigns then went for his finishing Spear.

Suddenly, Anderson and Gallows grabbed AJ out of the ring and began assaulting Reigns. Reigns got flattened and AJ dragged himself back onto the ring apron. AJ then caught Reigns with another Phenomenal Forearm, but Reigns survived the following pin. Soon, The Usos came out to brawl with Anderson and Gallows. While both teams fought, Reigns threw AJ right on top of them all on the outside. Reigns splashed onto everyone except for AJ. AJ snuck in another Phenomenal Forearm to Reigns from the crowd barrier. AJ then hit his Springboard 450 to Reigns, but could only grab a 2-count. AJ then signaled for the Styles Clash, but Reigns fought out of it. Reigns looked for a Superman Punch, but AJ kicked him away. AJ went airborne once again, but Reigns dodged him and speared him for the 1-2-3.

After the match, Vince spoke to Shane and Steph about AJ getting a rematch. It was decided that AJ would face Reigns for the title at Extreme Rules 2016 in…well, an Extreme Rules match.

Best Non-Match Moments/Highlights

• Mr. McMahon came out to address the live Chicago crowd. The crowd made themselves quite clear with him as they cheered for their missing hero, CM Punk. Mr. McMahon spoke about the history of RAW and the most defining eras of the WWE. It was up to him to decide who would run RAW – Stephanie or Shane McMahon. Steph spoke to the crowd about her past accomplishments and the post-RAW additions to the WWE roster. She made sure to verbally disrespect Shane and suck up to her father. Shane soon made his arrival during Steph’s speech. Shane made his case by displaying the headline making news stories that RAW has gotten with him in charge. Shane spoke on the impact of the WWE Network subscribers and his participation in ‘Mania 32’s big HIAC match.

Shane cleared up the reasoning behind him leaving WWE for the past seven years (he noted that him and Vince had creative differences). Shane was not too pleased with the Authority’s poisonous influence on the WWE. Shane returned to the WWE in order to better secure the future for the McMahon’s and the WWE. Shane used the live crowd to further convince Vince to make the right decision. Vince then spoke to both his children about what needs to be done next. Vince made the decision to let the both of them run RAW…together. Shane and Steph decided to shake on it to seal the deal.
