When the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons meet in Super Bowl LI, it will be the 14th head-to-head matchup in the history of the two franchises.
All of those meetings have been in the regular season, with the Pats owning a 7-6 record. The last time they played was back in September of 2013, when Tom Brady threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns to lead New England to a 30-23 victory.
While there hasn’t been a Bill Belichick vs. Dan Quinn matchup (even when Quinn was defensive coordinator with the Seahawks), Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan has faced Belichick’s Patriots once in his career. With Rex Grossman at QB, the Washington Redskins (Shanahan was offensive coordinator) managed to put up 27 points and 463 yards in a loss to New England in 2011. Shanahan pulled off a trick play in that one, as wide receiver Brandon Banks threw a 49-yard touchdown to Santana Moss:
