The New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons are headed to overtime, making Super Bowl LI the first Super Bowl to go into extra time in history. The Patriots were down 21-0 at one point, but the Patriots continued to chip away. The game was tied at 28-28 and the Patriots won the overtime coin toss. Amazingly, James White ran into the endzone to end the first drive. The final was 34-28.
Brady is now the only quarterback in history to win five Super Bowls and the first player to be named Super Bowl MVP four times. He finished the game with 43 completions for 466 yards and two passing touchdowns. James White’s touchdown was the game winner.
In the NFL’s overtime rules, the first team to score a touchdown wins. If a team gets a field goal, the other team gets the ball to try to score a touchdown or tie again with a field goal.
Every Super Bowl Tom Brady has been involved in has been a close game, but none of them have made it into overtime. Field goals by Adam Vinetari decided Super Bowl XXXVI, Super Bowl XXXVIII and Super Bowl XXXIX. Super Bowl XLIX was famously decided by Malcolm Butler’s interception at the one yard line to stop the Seattle Seahawks.
