The NFL free agency period begins Tuesday, March 7 but teams are not able to sign players until March 9 beginning at 4 p.m. Eastern. If this year’s free agency period is like last year, many handshake agreements will begin to trickle in on Tuesday even though they will have to wait a few days to execute the deal.
One of the big names of this free agency is Bucs quarterback Mike Glennon. Glennon served as Jameis Winston’s backup last season, but proved he was a solid player in his one season as a starter prior to Winston’s arrival. Yahoo’s Charles Robinson reported that Glennon could garner a contract worth $14-$15 million. The 49ers, Bears and Jets are three of the teams who have been linked to Glennon in free agency. Each team is in need of a quarterback and have a high draft pick. If either of these teams agrees to a deal with Glennon, it likely signals they will look to fill other needs with their high first round pick.
The Patriots Jimmy Garoppolo had been mentioned in trade rumors. However, the Boston Herald reported that the Patriots are looking for at least a first and second round draft pick in return for Garoppolo. It looks like New England is poised to hold onto the young quarterback for another season unless a team comes through with an unexpected offer.
CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported Tyrod Taylor is unlikely accept a pay-cut from the Bills meaning he is headed to the free agent market. La Canfora notes the Browns are one of the likeliest destinations for Taylor.
One of the big story lines continues to be what the Cowboys will do with Tony Romo. Assuming the Cowboys are not willing to pay Romo’s large salary for a backup quarterback, Dallas will either release or trade Romo. ESPN’s Todd Archer reports the Broncos and Texans as the most likely destination with the Chiefs, 49ers and Jaguars also in the mix.
Dallas would be wise to trade Romo rather than release him as they would get something in return for him. There is speculation the Cowboys would release Romo allowing him to go to a destination of his choice since he has a close relationship with owner Jerry Jones.
One of the big names on the market is wide receiver Brandon Marshall who was released by the Jets. The Ravens, Patriots and Giants are all teams that reportedly have interest in Marshall. Given his talent level, there are likely other suitors despite his lackluster 2016 season.
Another veteran wide receiver on the market is Alshon Jeffrey. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the Bears had a positive meeting with Jeffrey’s agent and the two sides are open to a possible return to Chicago. It is unclear whether the Bears will be willing to pay Jeffrey the amount of money he could command from other teams.
