Former Newcastle United midfield Cheick Tiote has died, according to a tweet from his former team mate Demba Ba. Ba wrote, “May Allah gives grant you jannah brother Tiote.” Sina Sports in China also reported on the death without giving a heart attack as a probable cause of death.

The tragic news was further confirmed by various sources in the United Kingdom. Tiote’s agent, Emanuele Palladino, told the Newcastle Chronicle’s Lee Ryder, “I confirm that my client Cheick Tiote sadly passed away today. We cannot say any more at the moment and we request that his family’s privacy be respected at this difficult time. We ask for all your prayers.”
Tiote was 30 years old, he would have turned 31 on June 21. He was a devout Muslim and was known to observe fasting during the holy month of Ramadan which lasts until June 24 this year.
Tiote left Newcastle for China in February 2017 as part of the spending spree clubs in the country were on at the time. During his career, Tiote also played for FC Twente in the Netherlands was a part of the Ivory Coast’s victorious 2015 Africa Cup of Nations squad. In total, Tiote won 52 caps for his homeland and played in the 2010 and 2014 World Cup tournaments.
