If you’re going to play to the home crowd there are definitely some can’t miss ways to do it. You mention a popular local restaurant or two, maybe joke about traffic on a well-known roadway, you throw a jovial haymaker across the bow of a local rival. Of course there’s probably no better way to endear yourself to the locals than finding a way to show your support for the home team, which is what Rickie Fowler is in the process of doing this weekend.
Fowler hit the course of the 2017 US Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin on Thursday with a golf bag adorned in green and yellow, the colors of Wisconsin’s very own Green Bay Packers.
Fowler, who is more typically associated with the color orange due in large part to his love of his alma mater Oklahoma State University, is sponsored by Cobra, who provided him with the bag. Once the tournament is over, you can best bet that Fowler would have no problem unloading it to a diehard Packers’ fan (most likely one with deep pockets.) Although given how well Fowler played on Thursday, he might be somewhat reluctant to give it up.
Fowler was by his lonesome atop the US Open leaderboard at the end of the first round. Any landscaping concerns on the course that have caused problems for other golfers didn’t seem to bother the California native. Fowler reached the fairway almost every time he tee’d off, racking up seven birdies and 11 pars in the first round.
This is far from the first time Fowler’s style has been a story at a tournament. He was roasted in May of 2016, as he played at TPC Sawgrass, for rocking a flashy pair of neon pink and yellow Puma cleats.
As far as whether or not Fowler is actually a Packers’ fan, it doesn’t look that way. It seems like he’s more interested in action sports like motocross than he is in football. Give him the chance, and he’ll even find a way to combine his love of motocross and golf.
Fowler is scheduled to tee off on Friday at 2:36 p.m. alongside Hideki Matsuyama and Jon Rahm.
