WATCH: Bethanie Mattek-Sands Suffers Scary Knee Injury at Wimbledon

Twitter Bethanie Mattek-Sands lays on the ground as Sorana Cirstea checks on her in a match at Wimbledon.

A scary scene at Court 17 halted play at Wimbledon on July 6.

It happened in a match between American Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Romanian Sorana Cirstea. In the opening game of the set in the second round of the tournament, Mattek-Sands chased a ball up to the net and slipped on the grass. She fell to the ground in pain and immediately grabbed her knee.

Mattek-Sands laid on the ground screaming and crying for help from anyone nearby, saying: “Help me please, my knee, help me.”

Cirstea hopped over the net to check on her opponent, but there was obviously nothing she could do but watch her suffer in immense pain. Mattek-Sands laid on the ground for some time as medical crews responded to her.

The match was stopped due to the injury, and Mattek-Sands was taken to an area hospital to be evaluated further.

The official Wimbledon Twitter account sent a tweet wishing Mattek-Sands the best of luck on her recovery from what they called an “acute knee injury.”

Mattek-Sands, 32, was a wild-card entry into the annual singles tournament this year. She’s ranked No. 1 in women’s doubles alongside her partner Lucie Safarova. The pair have won three-straight Grand Slam doubles titles with the most recent being at the French Open last June.

In addition to the success on the professional circuit, Mattek-Sands is an Olympic Gold Medalist in mixed doubles, winning during last year’s Rio Summer Olympics.

In singles, Mattek-Sands has won five titles on the ITF Circuit. Her best performance on the WTA Tour is when she reached the semifinals in Cincinnati in 2005. She did so again in 2008 in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

In November 2008, she married Justin Sands, an insurance executive. He was one of the first people to her aid on the court at Wimbledon while she laid there in excruciating pain.
