Former Eagles quarterback Rodney Peete is in a bit of hot water after allegedly scamming a business partner on an investment deal. Peete, who spent four seasons in Philadelphia, received $300,000 from Carlos Rogers in a failed plan to help keep the Raiders in Oakland.
Peete has denied the accusations being tossed on him and said “there’s no scam,” according to TMZ Sports.
“First of all, the investor in this venture in question was not Carlos Rogers the NFL player but another Carlos Rogers altogether. Unfortunately, the error in naming the incorrect Mr. Rogers in the initial reporting caused him unnecessary involvement, confusion and inconvenience.”
Peete is being sued by Rogers for the return of his initial investment, plus another $100,000 in punitive damages, according to TMZ Sports. The website originally reported that the man suing Peete was former NFL cornerback Carlos Rogers, but that was later proved false. The man in question is a successful real estate and marketing guru from California, according to Larry Brown Sports.
The lawsuit claims that Peete promised “everyone will be paid back” in the investment deal which sought to provide financing for a new football facility for the Raiders in Oakland. The move was thought to sway the team from moving to Las Vegas. Former NFL great Ronnie Lott was part of the original investment group and they presented their plan to Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf who advised them to get the support of the Raiders organization first.
“I will not meet with any developer for this project unless they are brought to me by the Raiders, and I have asked the City Council to do the same,” Schaaf told the San Francisco Chronicle.
Per TMZ, Rogers wired Peete the money in 2016 before NFL owners approved the Raiders move to Las Vegas. Peete allegedly “stalled and came up with excuses” when Rogers asked for a return on his investment. Peete has also been accused of scamming a ticket broker, selling weight loss pills and advertising for an over-the-counter erectile dysfunction drug, per Tom Hoffarth.
Peete played quarterback in the NFL for 16 seasons, including four years with the Eagles, from 1995 to 1998. He started 24 games and led the team to an improbable 58-37 playoff win in 1995 over the Detroit Lions. Peete threw for 270 yards and three scores in what was the highest-scoring postseason game ever at the time. The Eagles ripped off 44 straight points in the victory. During his time wearing Eagles green, he threw 17 touchdowns against 27 interceptions during his time in Eagles green, while recording a 15-9 record as a starter.
