Close your eyes Eagles’ fans – there’s yet more bad news to report about Philadelphia’s debilitated receiving corps.
Carson Wentz’s No. 1 weapon, Alshon Jeffery went down with a foot injury in the second quarter of the Eagles’ thrilling comeback win over the New York Giants on Monday night.
Jeffery suffered the injury on a non-contact play when he pushed off the line to head out on a route and came up limping.
The 29-year-old receiver was carted to the locker room and was ruled out for the rest of the game.
Jeffery was targeted twice and held without a catch.
Philadelphia, who came into the game with only three active receivers, fell severely shorthanded when Jeffery went down, as they were left with only two healthy WRs – Greg Ward and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside.
Alshon Jeffery Has Struggled to Stay on Field
Jeffery has only managed to play a full 16-game regular-season once in the last five years, which came in his first season with the Eagles in 2017. He has missed at least three games in four of the last five years.
Wentz’s top receiver dealt with an ankle injury earlier this season which he suffered in the Eagles’ 22-14 win over the Chicago Bears back on Nov. 3.
Jeffery finally looked like he was primed to turn the corner after posting a monster game last week against the Miami Dolphins when he caught nine passes for 137 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles’ 37-31 loss.
Eagles Also Lose All-Pro Lineman Lane Johnson
The list of key players going down continued to mount for the Eagles on Monday, as they also lost their top offensive lineman, Lane Johnson, to an ankle injury.
The All-Pro lineman from 2017 suffered the injury when Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz was tackled into his leg in the second quarter.
Johnson was carted off the field and did not return to the game. He was replaced by Halapoulivaati Vaitai at right tackle.
Despite Injuries, Wentz Rallies Eagles Back From Dead For 23-17 Overtime Win
With the Eagles’ season all but hanging in the balance, Carson Wentz delivered Philadelphia to an improbable comeback win, beating the Giants 23-17 in overtime.
The Eagles felt the wrath of the home crowd at Lincoln Financial Field when they went into the locker room at halftime down 17-3 to the 2-10 Giants.
Wentz, playing with a limited supply of offensive weapons after Jeffery went down, took the Eagles on his back and rallied them from a 14-point deficit.
The 26-year-old Wentz led the team on two clutch drives, an 85-yard march to tie the game late in the fourth quarter and a 75-yard drive to win the game in OT.
One of the Eagles’ lone-remaining healthy stars, tight end Zach Ertz, caught both the game-tying TD with 1:53 to go in regulation and the winning score in overtime.
Wentz finished with 325 passing yards and two TDs as the Eagles improved to 6-7.
With the win, Philadelphia drew even with the Cowboys atop the NFC East and now controls their own destiny. The Eagles would clinch the division by winning their final three games against the Redskins (Dec. 15), Cowboys (Dec. 22) and Giants (Dec. 29).
