From the beginning of his career with the Philadelphia 76ers to the very end with the Atlanta Hawks, Lou Williams was always a sixth man. Having won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year three times in his career, Williams made a name for himself in that role.

Because of his reputation as one of the league’s best sixth men of his time, Williams told TMZ Sports how honored he would be if the league named the award after him.

“That would be an honor,” Williams said. “If not me, Jamal (Crawford). If not Jamal, Manu (Ginobili). I think we’re three guys that champion that. We made it a lifestyle.”

Not only that, but Williams added that he, Crawford, and Ginobili are all worthy of being in the Basketball Hall of Fame for their impact on the role of the Sixth Man.

“I definitely think we’re all Hall of Famers,” he said. “We contributed to the game. I think the Hall of Fame is what you bring to the table and being the best at what you do in the realm of basketball. I think we all did that.”

Williams never won the award during his six years with the Sixers from 2005 to 2012, but he won it with the Toronto Raptors in 2015 and twice with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2018 and 2019.

Andre Iguodala Praises James Harden for Comments

Former Sixer Andre Iguodala praised James Harden on “Gil’s Show” for publically criticizing Daryl Morey, citing Harden’s ability to utilize his leverage.

“When you go into a contract negotiation, know what your value is and how you can leverage yourself. Know what opportunities you have on the other side, like to your safety net,” Iguodala said. “What is James’ safety net? Daryl Morey has a history with China, where he can say something, and the backlash from what he says, it may not be any because there’s a history there with Morey and China.”

Iguodala added that it was smart because he didn’t believe Harden didn’t do anything wrong among other things.

“It was a great move out of leverage by James, one, because it’s gonna be hard to discipline James, because what did he do wrong? Right? And James will sell some shoes. That’s ultimately why he’s over there,” Iguodala said.

Iguodala played with Williams throughout his tenure with the Sixers while both left in 2012. Williams signed with the Hawks in free agency, and Iguodala was traded to the Denver Nuggets.

Danny Green Believes Situation Can’t Be Amended

Following Harden’s comments, former Sixer and Harden teammate Danny Green explained how he believes both sides will approach the situation going forward on the August 14 episode of ESPN’s NBA Today.

“Do I think this can be something that can be [mended]? Probably not, but Daryl is going to have to meet him at least halfway to try to bring him into camp,” Green said. “I also don’t see James as a guy that’s going to come into camp and dog it. He’s either not gonna play, or when he does play, I see him being the professional that he is and giving his best, but I don’t see him doing that. I think he’s gonna try to hold out.”
