Packers QB Jordan Love to ‘Miss Some Time’ After Specific Injury Revealed: Report

The Green Bay Packers will be without quarterback Jordan Love for a period of time following the knee injury he suffered against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1, but it won’t be the entire season.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported an update on the nature of Love’s injury, which was at the same time good and bad news.

“Sources: Packers QB Jordan Love is believed to have injured his MCL, pending further testing,” Schefter posted to X on Saturday, September 7. “It is not expected to be a season-ending injury, but he is expected to miss some time.”

Green Bay now must decide whether to add more depth to the quarterback room or to roll with backup Malik Willis, who has been with the team for less than two weeks, and second-year practice squad quarterback Sean Clifford.

QB Malik Willis Will Start for Packers Against Colts in Week 2

Love finished the day 17-of-34 passing for 260 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT against a tough Eagles defense. He did not attempt a rush.

Willis played the final two plays of the game in relief of Love. The result of the first play was an incomplete pass, while the QB took a sack on the final action of the game that sealed Green Bay’s 5-point loss.

The Packers could look to add a proven veteran like Ryan Tannehill to the roster, as Love could be out a month or more, which is the type of move Packers fans can look for in the next couple of days. However, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported on Sunday that Willis “will get the start” against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2.

Should that scenario work out for the Packers, Willis will presumably continue to start with Clifford serving as his backup.

In that case, the team may look to bring in a less prominent and less expensive QB than Tannehill to compete with Clifford for the No. 2 spot on the roster — perhaps someone like 25-year-old free agent Kellen Mond, who the rival Minnesota Vikings selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft.

One silver lining for Willis and the Packers is that Love’s injury came during a Friday night game, which means a longer week of preparation before their next contest. Green Bay will get nine days off before hosting Indianapolis at Lambeau Field on September 15.

Willis can use every extra minute, as the third-year pro has now appeared in just 12 games as a professional and started only three. (1-2).

For his career, Willis has completed just 52.2% of his passes for 350 yards and 3 INTs. He has also rushed the football a total of 32 times for 144 yards and 1 TD.

Meanwhile, Clifford appeared in just two games during his rookie campaign last year and has never thrown a pass in the NFL.
