Patriots Re-Sign Another Undrafted Free Agent

On Thursday afternoon, the New England Patriots re-signed undrafted free agent quarterback Brian Lewerke. The team has several openings on its 80-man roster after six players opted out of the upcoming NFL season because of health and safety concerns. Lewerke is the second undrafted free agent the team has brought back following the re-signing of Auburn wide receiver Will Hastings.

Brian Lewerke on His Way Back to Foxborough

Per Graham Couch of Lansing State Journal, the Michigan State Spartan’s alum is already headed back to New England.

The Patriots signed two undrafted rookie free-agent quarterbacks. Lewerke and J’Mar Smith out of Louisiana Tech. Clearly, the Patriots had their choice of the two and chose to bring Lewerke back.

It’s a similar situation at wide receiver. The Patriots could have brought Isaiah Zuber or Will Hastings back, and they chose the latter. Prior to that, the Patriots held on to the talented Jeff Thomas even after the initial cutdown to 80 players.

How good of a chance does Lewerke have of sticking on the roster? If we’re being honest, his best shot is making the practice squad.

Still, it’s got to be great to have his name called. At the very least, he’ll potentially add some experience, and h may be able to impress people who could give him a better opportunity down the road.

Lewerke’s Spot on the Depth Chart

As of now, you’d have to consider Lewerke to be the fourth QB on the roster behind Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham, and Brian Hoyer. The job appears to be Newton’s to lose. However, if he, or any of the other two quarterbacks goes down with an injury on has some sort of COVID-19 difficulties, Lewerke could find himself in a different situation.

The team is almost certain to stay put at the position with Lewerke’s re-signing, but then again, this is 2020, and through seven months, we’ve learned anything can happen.
