It didn’t come until the second quarter, but Cam Newton found pay dirt for the first time as a member of the New England Patriots on Sunday vs. the Dolphins.

Cam Newton Scores His First Patriots’ Touchdown

The Patriots’ offense had been extremely run-heavy the entire game. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels did a great job using multiple packages to keep the Dolphins off balance. Newton made the Dolphins respect his arm with quick and accurate throws underneath, and that set up his touchdown to punctuate masterfully orchestrated and executed 11-play, 80-yard drive.

This was Newton’s 59th career rushing TD of his career and it gave the Patriots a 7-0 lead. He’s rush for his 60th later in the game as he led the team to a 21-11 victory.

Newton’s Day Statistically

In his Patriots debut, Newton was efficient, virtually mistake-free as he proved himself to still be a weapon as a passer and runner. Both of the touchdowns he scored came on the ground, but he threw only four incompletions and no interceptions in a strong performance.

The Patriots’ Physicality is Real

It started with Newton, but this concept of Bully Ball seems to have been passed across the entire offense’s mentality. The Patriots ran the ball a whopping 22 times on Sunday for 217 yards and all three of the team’s touchdowns.

The physical manhandling might have something to do with the Dolphins’ frustrations at the end of the game. Several Dolphins seemed to come after Newton at the conclusion of the game as things got chippy. There didn’t appear to be any major ramifications from the scuffle, but it’s fair to say we could see a lot of this throughout the season.
