Stars vs Breakers Preview

The Philadelphia Stars and New Orleans Breakers meet on the USFL’s opening weekend on Sunday. Both teams feature former NFL players.

Philadelphia has quarterback Case Cookus, who made the practice squads of four different NFL teams. Cookus also played in the CFL for the Edmonton Elks.

Stars wide receiver Devin Gray played three seasons for Atlanta and spent a year on the Baltimore Ravens practice squad. Running back Matthew Colburn II was with the Los Angeles Rams organization in 2019 and played the defunct XFL. Tight end Bug Howard spent time on six different NFL practice squads.

New Orleans has quarterback Kyle Sloter, a former Detroit Lions backup, who impressed in Minnesota Vikings preseason games previously in 2017 and 2018. The Breakers also have former Tulsa quarterback Zach Smith who went undrafted last year.

Breakers wide receiver Taywan Taylor played for the Tennessee Titans, and Chad Williams played for the Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts. Running back T.J. Logan also played for the Cardinals and was on the practice squad of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

On defense, the Stars have defensive end Freedom Akinmoldaun, who played for the Cincinnati Bengals, and defensive end Carroll Phillips, who played for three different NFL teams. Linebacker Te’von Coney was on the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad for three seasons. Defensive tackle Michael Barnette spent time in the Lions training camp.

Stars defensive back Channing Stribling was on four different NFL practice squads. Fellow defensive back Mazzi Wilkins played two seasons for the Buccaneers, and Jack Tocho was on three NFL practice squads.

Breakers defensive players with NFL experience include defensive lineman Davin Bellamy, who spent time on five different practice squads. Linebacker Shareef Miller played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers.

Stars head coach Bart Andrus has NFL experience, who previously worked under Jeff Fisher in Tennessee. Breakers head coach Larry Fedora has FBS head coaching experience from North Carolina and Southern Miss.

Andrus has continuity coming into the inaugural USFL rebirth season because he coached Stars quarterback Bryan Scott in the spring league and went unbeaten. Scott spent time in CFL organizations but never made a regular season roster in British Columbia or Edmonton.

The Stars existed in the old USFL and won a title in 1984. The Breakers likewise existed in the former, short-lived USFL and moved around to Boston and Portland in addition to New Orleans. The old USFL folded shortly after.
