Less than a week before Apple is set to announce the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, new rumors have arisen claiming that Tim Cook and his team are testing significantly larger screens for the new set of iPhones coming out in 2014.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is exploring varying sizes for new screens. Ranging from 4.8 inches to as high as 6, the new phones would take a tremendous leap up in size from the iPhone 5’s 4 inch display.
Identical rumors appeared last month claiming this process was being applied towards the new iPads as well. If this is true, this drastic size adjustment would be the first considerable experimentation Apple would do on the iPhone since its creation in 2007.
The new iPhone 5C is one of the speculated smartphones being unveiled next week and is the first sign Apple is trying something different. The 5C is allegedly going to be Apple’s budget smartphone meant to attract more conservative customers and penetrate more emerging markets.
These prototypes would ship next year since it sounds like Apple is still in the testing stage. Motivation for heading into phablet territory could be because of Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 5.7 inch screen which was well received. However, this new nugget of information will probably keep the rumor mill churning for awhile.
