Sir John Hurt, whose acting and voice acting career spanned six decades, died at the age of 77 on January 27.

The legendary actor, who starred in such films as The Elephant Man and Alien and the movie series Harry Potter died January 27, Mirror reported.

Hurt was diagnosed with with early-stage pancreatic cancer on June 16, 2015, he revealed. He told Radio Times following the announcement:

“I can’t say I worry about mortality, but it’s impossible to get to my age and not have a little contemplation of it,” Hurt said. “We’re all just passing time, and occupy our chair very briefly. But my treatment is going terrifically well, so I’m optimistic.”

He told the press following about the progress of the cancer treatment, “I am overjoyed, I am thrilled. It all looks great for the future, it’s fantastic,” the Daily Mail article stated. He returned to work just four months after undergoing treatment for the cancer.


Hurt is survived by a wife, Anwen Rees-Myers (married since 2005), and two children.

In 1990, Hurt’s then-wife Joan Dalton gave birth to son Alexander Hurt and then in 1993 the couple had celebrated the birth of Nicholas Hurt, John’s only kids. Before marrying Dalton, Hurt had short-lived marriages with Donna Peacock and Annette Robertson.

Hurt was nominated for Best Actor at The Oscars in 1981 for his role in The Elephant Man and two years earlier was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his acting in Midnight Express. In addition to his success in movies, Hurt also spent time as a TV actor, playing a role on British TV shows including Doctor Who.

One of his most well-known movie roles was when he played the character Kane in Alien; he died a horrific death.

In 2015, Hurt was knighted in the 2015 New Year Honours.

A May 2016 article noted that Hurt’s estate is worth about $20 million.
