A Chinese woman was killed after saving her child and falling into an escalator shaft in a shopping center in central China. Surveillance footage released by the mall from Sunday’s accident shows a metal plate at the top of the escalator falling out and causing the woman and her young boy to fall.
The woman then shoves her child to safety but is stuck grasping on slippery metal before falling into the escalator shaft.
Unconfirmed reports said that maintenance works had been carried out on the escalator recently, and workmen had replaced the metal panel but forgotten to secure it with screws, Wuhan Evening News said.
The mother was pronounced dead after rescue workers took over 3 hours to retrieve her. Her body was unrecognizable.
