National Donut Day is finally here. What started out as a Salvation Army holiday during World War I has become a popular day for bakeries to celebrate and drum up interest. After all, nothing gets everyone to open a door like a free donut. Here’s where you can find some deals and a bit of history of the day.
Dunkin’ Donuts
Dunkin’ Donuts will be handing out free donuts with any beverage purchase all day. You can’t leave Dunkin’ without a cup of coffee, so it’s a deal.
Krispy Kreme
Krispy Kreme loves handing out free donuts for any reason and they are just giving them away today.
Honey Dew
At Honey Dew, you have to buy a medium drink for your free donut.
Cumberland Farms
You need to buy a Chill Zone drink to get a free donut at Cumberland Farms.
Giant Eagle
If you want six free donuts, find a Giant Eagle grocery store. If you have a Giant Eagle Advantage Card and buy a half dozen, you get another half dozen for free. You can also get one free donut when you buy a hot or cold beverage.
If there are any more deals, let us know!
Thank The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army is responsible for coming up with Donut Day. They served donuts and coffee to soldiers during World War I. The Salvation Army hopes donut lovers will donate their time to help senior citizen feeding programs, meals on wheels and child nutrition programs.
Strangely enough, there is a second National Donut Day on November 5. John Bryan Hopkins of Foodimentary told Boston.com that when he started his site, he found a reference to November 5 as a Donut Day in a copy of Ladies’ Home Journal and theorizes that it was just created by a retailer to get some extra publicity around Veterans Day. But it also gives us another opportunity to pick up free donuts later in the year.
