Hundreds of people gathered in Union Square on Thursday night for a protest after two black men were killed by white police officers in 24 hours.
Those in attendance at the rally used the hashtag #StopPoliceTerror to voice their outrage over the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. The former man from Louisiana was shot by police outside of a convenience store, while the latter man from Minnesota was killed during a traffic stop while his girlfriend broadcast his death live on Facebook.
Demonstrators at the protest held up signs of some of the victims of police shootings like Michael Brown and Akai Gurley.
“This has become too repetitious, it’s cold-blooded murder,” a demonstrator told The New York Daily News. “The level of anger is rising.”
Many of these victims’ names were also written in chalk on the ground. Not long into the rally, Union Square began trending on Twitter.
