International Women’s Day: State-By-State List of ‘A Day Without a Woman’ Strikes & Rallies

day without a woman

(Women’s March on Washington)

Today, on International Women’s Day, the Women’s March on Washington group is hosting a nationwide general strike called “A Day Without A Woman.” The event is being hosted in solidarity with International Women’s Strike USA events taking place today across the country. The Women’s Strike aims to encourage women to not work today, if they can, but also offers other opportunities for women to show their support if they can’t take off from work. The original idea of just striking met some criticism, with concerns that it didn’t fully include many women who don’t have the job security to take a day off from work. However, the Women’s March on Washington is now providing a number of ways that women can participate and show their support for women’s rights. Here are some ways that you can participate, according to the Women’s March on Washington:

  • Do not engage in paid or unpaid work
  • Avoid spending money (except to support small, women-, and minority-owned businesses)
  • Wear red in solidarity
  • Men can show support by taking care of women or housework and promoting family-friendly policies at work

In addition, some women are participating in rallies and other events related to International Women’s Day. Below you’ll find a state-by-state list, in alphabetical order, of women’s strike and International Women’s Day events happening around the country.
