Jersey City local schools were put on lockdown during an active shooting which took place nearby and has left at least six people dead, including a Jersey City police officer and three civilians. While speaking to kids in Jersey City at the same time, New York Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa was inside the school when it was put on lockdown Tuesday.
Fox5 News reporter Tina Cervasio tweeted, “I have learned #Jets WR Quincy Enunwa was talking to kids in a NJ school where there was mass shooting and he is still now in lockdown in the NJ school at the moment. Will to keep you updated.”
The report was also confirmed by ESPN’s Rich Cimini.
Enunwa, 27, went to the University of Nebraska and was selected by the Jets in the sixth round, 209th overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.
Police described the scene as “chaotic.” The since deceased police officer was investigating a murder when he approached two suspects. One of them opened fire, shooting the officer in the head, and then both suspects fled in a U-Haul van and ran into the corner store, according to scanner transmissions.
The bodega in question was located at Wilkinson Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive in Jersey City, which is about eight miles southwest of Manhattan. The specific address was 223 MLK Drive, according to NJ.com. After an ensuing gun battle, the suspect and three civilians were killed inside the bodega. Officials said the officer killed was 39 years old, and the father of five children.
At the time, all Jersey City schools were put on lockdown, as well as public transportation to and from the area.
The New Jersey transit police wrote, “NJ Transit Police are assisting Jersey City with an active shooting incident within the area of the west side branch. Stay clear of the area until further notice. HBLR service is suspended. ALL bus service on the West Side Branch is suspended updates to follow.”

New Jersey governor Steve Murphy wrote, “I have been briefed on the unfolding situation in Jersey City. Our thoughts and prayers are with the men and women of the Jersey City Police Department, especially with the officers shot during this standoff, and with the residents and schoolchildren currently under lockdown.”
“I have every confidence in our law enforcement professionals to ensure the safety of the community and resolve this situation,” Murphy added. “Today reminds us of their bravery and the sacrifices they, and their families, make for our communities.”

Cervasio tweeted an update at 4:26 p.m. saying the Enunwa, and all the schools kids were unharmed. At 5 p.m. she tweeted, “The lockdown has ended at the #JerseyCity school where #Jets Quincy Enunwa was speaking during the #jerseycityshooting. He is safe and on his way home.”
Mayor Steven Fulop said in a statement, “Parents: At 4:15 p.m. we are planning on systematically releasing any schools that have been on lock down.”
Enunwa has been on injured reserve after suffering a season-ending neck injury in Week 1 of the 2019 NFL season. The wide receiver also missed the entirety of the 2017 season due to a neck injury. In 2018, he played well enough to receive a four-year, $33.4 million contract extension with the Jets.
