A raging blaze tore through a flooded waterfront neighborhood Monday night, destroying 80-100 homes with fire as Hurricane Sandy ravaged New York City with wind and water.
Hundreds of firefighters battled the six-alarm inferno in the worst possible conditions. No one was killed, but the hellish disaster laid waste to the neighborhood of Breezy Point, Queens, located on the Rockaway Peninsula.
Breezy Point was in the city’s “Zone A,” the low-lying regions designated for mandatory evacuation due to the extreme storm surge predicted for Hurricane Sandy. Most residents had heeded the mayor’s instruction to evacuate, preventing massive injury or death from the devastating blaze, but at least one firefighter and two civilians were injured.
