Whitby, a quiet town of 123,000 on the shore of Lake Ontario, was rocked by a shooting that sent four victims to hospital Thursday afternoon, including one victim in critical condition who was airlifted to a trauma centre in downtown Toronto.

Durham region police responded to the reports of a shooting at the White Oaks Court apartment building at 12:30 p.m., after neighbours called in saying they heard gunshots. One witness, who declined to be identified, called into CityNews television and claimed to have a neighbour who saw blood in an elevator.

Investigators have set up a perimeter around the crime scene as police officers scour the area for evidence and search for suspects.
Toronto and the surrounding region has a very low murder rate for a major metropolis, however there have been four teens killed in the city since the beginning of 2013.
