Shailene Woodley is best known for her role as Tris Prior in Lionsgate’s Divergent franchise. She’s also the star of Oliver Stone‘s new movie Snowden, which hits theaters on September 16. In the film, she plays Lindsay Mills, the girlfriend of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.
Woodley began her career on television and shot to fame as Amy Juergens on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, which ran from 2008 to 2013. Since then, she’s seen her fortunes grow. Here’s a look at how much she’s worth and what she does with her money.
1. Woodley’s Estimated Net Worth is $9 Million
The 24-year-old Woodley has a net worth of $9 million, Celebrity Net Worth estimates.
Woodley was born in San Bernardino County, California and grew up in Simi Valley. Her parents, Lori and Lonnie Woodley, are both educators and psychologists. She also has a younger brother named Tanner.
“I was born into a family of warriors, really strong people,” Woodley told Elle Magazine. “It doesn’t mean that it was an easy childhood and we didn’t have our shit, because every family does behind closed doors. But even though my parents are divorced, they get along. I have a family who every day strives to do the right thing.”
2. Woodley Earned Between $250,000 to $500,000 to Star in the First ‘Divergent’ Movie
In 2014, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Woodley earned between $250,000 and $500,000 for starring in the first Divergent movie. From the moment she signed on, she was constantly compared to Jennifer Lawrence, the face of the Hunger Games franchise. Lawrence earned just $500,000 for the first Hunger Games movie, but saw a raise to $10 million for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
While Lionsgate has continued to adapt Veronica Roth’s Divergent movies, the films have failed to be anywhere near as profitable as The Hunger Games movies. The first Divergent movie grossed $150.9 million in the U.S. Last year’s Insurgent made $130.2 million and this year’s Allegiant made just $66.2 million domestically.
Thanks to the failure of Allegiant, Lionsgate has been talking about making the film film, Ascendant, into a TV movie. Woodley made it clear to ScreenRant that she’s not interested in that. While on the Today Show, Woodley said the cast was in a “limbo waiting game” to find out.
“I signed up to tell the whole story of Tris. I would love to be able to do that. Nothing would make me happier,” she said.
3. Woodley Helped Raise $60,000 With a ‘Divergent’ Charity Screening & Has Donated Her Hair to Charity
Woodley has donated her time to various charitable causes. In March 2014, Veronica Roth, actor Theo James and Woodley got together to host a screening of Divergent in Thousand Oaks, California to raise $60,000 for All It Takes. The charity was founded by Woodley and her mother in 2010 and includes a youth leadership program that “teaches young people at a critical life stage to practice honor, acceptance, compassion and respect in order to create sustainable, positive change among their peers, family members and society.”
“People came to see Divergent, period,” Lori Woodley told The Wrap in 2014. “But they left loving Divergent and caring about our mission and what we do.”
After making The Fault In Our Stars, Woodley decided to have her hair cut for charity in 2013. She announced her decision to join the #HairForHazel campaign on her Tumblr blog and urged fans to do the same. She asked fans to donate their hair to Children With Hair Loss, which makes wigs for children who have lost their hair due to medical reasons.
4. Woodley Said Last Year That She’s Homeless After Giving Her Grandmother Her Los Angeles Home
While on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2014, Woodley claimed that she has everything she needs to live in a little suitcase and decided to go homeless by choice because she is rarely home. She decided to give her Los Angeles home to her grandmother and “couch surfs” from place to place.
When she was on Live! With Kelly and Michael in March 2015, she said she was still homeless.
“No, definitely haven’t bought a place,” she said. “I still live out of a suitcase. I’m ready to ground down again, though.”
“I have a vagabond lifestyle,” she also told the Telegraph last year.
5. Woodley Is Really Frugal, Only Buys Used Clothes & Advocates for Detox Method With Clay
Woodley is famously down-to-earth and says she only wears used clothes when she’s not at work or on the red carpet.
“I exclusively buy used clothes,” she told the Hollywood Reporter in March 2014. “I’m going to be a citizen of this planet, and I’m going to do my responsibility and live in stride with nature instead of constantly fighting against her.”
In her Telegraph interview last year, she similarly said that she hasn’t splurged on anything and tries to live as environmentally friendly as possible.
“I haven’t splurged on anything and I live a very simple lifestyle because that’s the life that satisfies my soul,” she explained.
In the same interview, she said that if she didn’t become an actress, she would “do something with food. Finding seeds, planting seeds, watching them grow, harvesting the fruits, cooking the fruits, eating them, seeing how my body reacts.”
In 2014, Woodley also advocated for using a detox method that involves swallowing clay, calling it “one of the best things you can put in your body” in an Into The Gloss blog post.
“…I’ve discovered that clay is great for you because your body doesn’t absorb it, and it apparently provides a negative charge, so it bonds to negative isotopes. And, this is crazy: it also helps clean heavy metals out of your body,” she said. She explained that her friend was worried because “my shit smells like metal” and they did research on it together.
“She was really worried, but we did some research together and everything said that when you first start eating clay, your bowel movements, pee, and even you, yourself, will smell like metal,” she said. “You should obviously be careful about your source. Bentonite clay is good, but Mountain Rose Herbs has a great clay source. I get all of my herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs, too.”
