The first two Cars movies could hardly be called dark, but it looks like the Pixar team is changing things up for the third film in the series. If you have some Lightning McQueen fans in your household, you might not want them to see the teaser for Cars 3 when you see Disney’s Moana this weekend.
That’s because the brief, 50-second teaser shows McQueen, the character voiced by Owen Wilson, after a car crash. The burned-out car falls into the frame in slow-motion, with other parts floating down. “From this moment, everything will change,” the slogan reads at the end.
The Cars films are widely considered the weakest entries in the Pixar filmography, with Cars 2 earning the distinction of being the first Pixar movie not nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar since that award was created. Cars 2 (2011) grossed $564.1 million worldwide, while the 2006 original made $462.2 million worldwide.
Cars 3 is being directed by longtime Pixar artist Brian Fee and written by the late Daniel Gerson (Big Hero 6, Monsters University). It’s scheduled for release on June 16, 2017 and centers on McQueen trying to prove that he’s still the best race car in the world.
In May, Disney and Pixar revealed details of the film, which will feature a new car named Cruz Ramirez, who wants to show that he’s better than McQueen. “Cruz Ramirez is trying to figure out how this old dog can learn some new tricks,” Fee said.
So far, we know that Larry The Cable Guy is also back to voice Mater and Bonnie Hunt will voice Sally again. Cheech Marin will voice Ramone.
