Now that Logan is in theaters, you might be wondering what’s next for 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise. While the studio has plenty of plans for the Marvel property, there is actually only one movie with a definite release date – Deadpool 2. The studio has plans for movies featuring Gambit and X-Force, but neither of these projects have a release date.
Here’s a look at the future of Fox’s X-Men universe. It’s worth noting that the series now includes its first TV series, FX’s acclaimed Legion.
Deadpool 2 – March 2, 2018
A brief teaser scene for Deadpool 2 is now in theaters, and is being shown ahead of Logan screenings. It has been posted online and isn’t expected to be in Deadpool 2 itself. The film is currently scheduled for March 2, 2018.
The first Deadpool became the highest-grossing R-rated superhero movie, taking in an astonishing $783.1 million worldwide on a $58 million budget. The film was directed by fist-timer Tim Miller and starred Ryan Reynolds as the Merc With a Mouth. Only two other X-Men – Colossus and Teenage Negasonic Warhead – appeared in the film. David Leitch, who co-directed John Wick with Chad Stahelski, is taking over for Miller in the director’s chair.
Gambit
There were once dreams of getting Channing Tatum’s solo Gambit movie in theaters in 2016, but that never happened. Director Doug Liman left the project so he could direct Amazon’s The Wall pilot. Rupert Wyatt, who’s now directing The Batman was also attached.
In an interview with LRM Online, producer Simon Kinberg said that it could start filming in 2018.
“Channing is—in the best possible way—as committed and as rigorous about getting the character right as Ryan was with Deadpool and as Hugh was with Logan on this movie, and so it’s been about finding a filmmaker and someone who can capture that voice and hand it off to Channing,” Kinberg explained. “But he’s been a really critical part of the process, and we’re hoping that the movie—probably given his schedule—will be ready to go this year and probably shoot next year.”
Strangely enough, IMDb lists The Shawshank Redemption‘s Frank Darabont as the director on Gambit, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. Kinberg didn’t mention Darabont at all in the LRM interview.
X-Men: Supernova
Speaking of Simon Kinberg, in February 2017, Collider reported that the producer is in talks to direct X-Men: Supernova. The project could start filming as soon as June 2017 and will star Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) as Jean Grey. Turner, who appeared in X-Men: Apocalypse, told HeyUGuys that she’s filming an X-Men movie this year.
New Mutants
Josh Boone, the director of The Fault In Our Stars, is directing New Mutants. That film is expected to have the vibe of a young adult novel adaptation. It’s not clear which mutants will be involved, but James McAvoy is expected to reprise his role as Professor X.
McAvoy’s Split co-star Anya Taylor-Joy told ComingSoon.net that McAvoy will be in the movie. Taylor-Joy is expected to play Magik, while Maisie Williams has been rumored to play Wolfsbane. Nat Wolff has been rumored to play Cannonball.
“I have [seen the Demon Bear animatic], it’s pretty cool,” Taylor-Joy told ComingSoon.net, referring to an animatic of the villain Demon Bear. “I’m a big fan so I’d love to be a part of it. I can’t say very much, but I would love to be a part of it. I think this year’s gonna be very exciting.”
When asked if McAvoy was involved in New Mutants, she replied, “I mean, I think James is already a part of it, isn’t he?”
X-Force
X-Force is closely tied to Deadpool, since it will likely feature Cable and was also created by Rob Liefeld. Collider is now reporting that Joe Carnahahn, who is currently working on Bad Boys 3, is currently writing the script for X-Force.
Cable and possibly Dominio, who are both members of X-Force, are expected to appear in Deadpool 2. Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) was previously working on X-Force.
