Edith Gonzalez is the Mexican telenovela star who died on June 13 at the age of 54, three years after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She is survived by her husband, Lorenzo Margain, and daughter Constanza, 15.
Actress Leticia Calderon confirmed Gonzalez’s death in a tweet that read, “Güera (Edith) we will miss you! There is no more pain harder than the one that your mom is feeling, which I embrace with great affection.”
Gonzalez was born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, in the northern part of Mexico on December 10, 1964. Gonzalez’s father, Efrain, was an accountant, her mother was a stay-at-home mom.

1. Gonzalez Was Diagnosed With Ovarian Cancer in 2016

Gonzalez was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in August 2016. At the time, Gonzalez said that her cancer was “very aggressive.” Mexican journalist Mara Patricia Castaneda told the morning TV show “HOY” that Gonzalez had passed away in the early hours of June 13. At the time of her death, Gonzalez was being treated at the Angeles Interlomas hospital in Mexico City. Gonzalez tragic passing was further confirmed in a tweet from the National Association of Actors. The show’s host, Raul Araiza, said that Gonzalez “asked us to remember her with a lot of affection and to be honored at the Jorge Negrete Theater.” Gonzalez’s funeral will be held at the storied theater.
In 2010, Gonzalez married Lorenzo Lazo Margain. Gonzalez told Hola! magazine in a 2017 cover story regarding her courageous cancer battle, “I am not a warrior, I am a lover of life.”
Following her cancer diagnosis, Gonzalez confirmed that she underwent various surgeries to have her lymph nodes, ovaries and uterus removed. In a 2019 interview on “Un Nuevo Dia,” Gonzalez said that her father, who suffered from cancer, had been her inspiration. Gonzalez said in the interview, “I said to myself: if my father can, I can.”
2. Gonzalez Began Her Acting as a Child Star in the 1970s
During her storied career, Gonzalez was seen on the Televisa, Telemundo and TV Azteca networks. During her time with Azteca, which began in 2010, Gonzalez was seen in the telenovela, “Cielo Rojo,” and the reality show, “The Academy.” Gonzalez prior reality TV experience saw her appear as a judge on the show, “Dancing for a Dream.” In April 2019, Gonzalez denied rumors that her declining health was the reason for her absence from the show, “This is my style.”

Gonzalez first got the acting bug in childhood when she was cast in the movie “El Rey los Gorilas” in 1976 at the age of 11, according to an online bio. Prior to the that, Gonzalez appeared in the telenovela “Lucia Sombra” at 6 years of age. Among the soap operas Gonzalez appeared in include, “The Rich Also Cry,” “Flor y Canela” and “I’ll Never Forget You.”
As an acting student, Gonzalez said she was most captivated by the works of Dostoyevski, Anton Chekhov and Leon Tolstoi. Gonzalez studied at dance at the Sorbonne in Paris and acting at the Actors Studio in New York City. In that same profile, Gonzalez said that she had received film offers from the U.S. but nothing that made her want to make the move north.
3. Gonzalez Final Tweet Was a Celebration of Life
In her final tweet, Gonzalez paid tribute to the beauty of life saying, “Good morning!!!!! Today we are given a new opportunity to love, I know it sounds mega-corny, but it’s net. Love every second, enjoy the gift of life! Even the simplest movement our body makes is a symbol of freedom and love. Gózalo !!!! So …. Guenaaaaas !!!!” On her Twitter bio, Gonazalez wrote, “If I can you can ?The power is inside you.”
The pinned tweet at the top of Gonzalez’s page read, “Dear past, thank you for your teachings. Dear future, I am ready. GOD my thanks for a new opportunity. Dear past, thank you for your lessons. Dear future, I am ready. Dear GOD, thank you for another chance !!!”
4. Her Daughter’s Father Did Not Acknowledge His Parentage Until His Child Was 4 Years Old

Gonzalez’s daughter’s father is Mexican politician Santiago Creel. Creel did not acknowledge is parentage of the child until 2008. The couple’s child was born in August 2004. A 2006 article on Gonzalez said that she was refusing to reveal the identity of Constanza’s father.
Despite his refusal to publicly acknowledge his role as Constanza’s father, Gonzalez had said in an interview that Creel had “always been present” in their daughter’s life.
5. In 2014, Gonzalez & Her Husband Were Mugged Inside of a Shopping Center in an Incident That Was Captured on Video
In 2014, Gonzalez and her husband were mugged inside of a shopping center in the San Jeronimo neighborhood of Mexico City. Neither were seriously injured. The mugging was captured on surveillance video.
The couple had their watches stolen in an incident that unfolded over 15 seconds. It was reported at the time that Gonzalez tweeted at the time that she had been stabbed during the mugging.
