Top 10 Best Mobile Games of 2015 You Need to Play

So we’ve covered the most revered games for all three major home consoles. Plus we made sure to show some love to the best portable 3DS releases. And now we’re ready to showcase our favorite mobile games of the year.

Picking only 10 of 2015’s best iOS/Android games was a daunting task, but we did our best to weave through the garbage and pick out the gems. Several well known gaming luminaries appeared in new mobile games, plus there were a good amount of original IP’s to become accustomed to. Lara Croft starred in a mobile take on her tomb raiding adventures, an infamous Pac-Man glitch got turned into an awesome infinite runner, we attempted to solve an intriguing murder mystery, plus we accomplished so many more varied goals across other titles.

Those examples and many more make up the bulk of the activities we did in the top 10 best mobile games of 2015!

10. Her Story

There’s nothing quite like Her Story within the gaming landscape. This playable murder mystery doesn’t feature a AAA-game developed toolset, but that doesn’t hinder it one bit. What you do get is one main female character being investigated and the choice to research her many interviews with any key words you can think of. The live drama continually crescendos and keeps you on the edge of your seat. From the outside looking in, this game may seem like nothing more than a video watching simulator. But don’t pass up Her Story. Spend a few hours with it and you’ll wanna know what happened to a british woman’s missing husband more than anything else.

9. DomiNations

It was easy to see that DomiNations would be end up being one of the best strategy, world building mobile games of 2015. Legendary video game designer Brian Reynolds (Civilization II, Rise of Nations) and his team took us on a historic journey alongside civilization’s strongest nations. With real world armies to choose and grow with, it felt gratifying to follow the progress of your chosen nation over time. There was a ton of fun to be hand as we constructed Wonders of The World, laid waste to other armies with our Roman Empire and joined an alliance that ruled with an iron fist. DomiNations brought out our inner war general and now we can’t stop going to war!

8. Rayman Adventures

The infinite runner sub-genre has featured a long line of console gaming mascots. Sonic The Hedgehog is just one of the many animated gaming critters who’s hopped onto mobile devices. Ubisoft transported its lovable, no-limb having hero Rayman into a smaller game that looked just as good as their home console entries. Rayman Adventures was incredibly easy on the eyes thanks to the fine art design done with the UbiArt Framework video game engine. This game stood apart from other infinite runners by allowing players to switch directions, which gave everyone the option to find every treasure they may have run past. The series’ signature humor is on full display and the Incrediball creatures are too damn lovable. Rayman Adventures is the most visually pleasing and entertaining mobile infinite runner of the year.

7. Implosion – Never Lose Hope

Implosion – Never Lose Hope brought the AAA-game elements seen in big console games to iOS/Android devices. This top-down action RPG made us feel like the ultimate killing weapon as we cut down humanity’s opposers within the all-powerful War-Mech series III battle suit. Racking up double-digit hit combos always felt awesome, so there was never a dull moment when it came time to clear out a room of baddies. The visuals shine the brightest and do a fine job of showing just how much better mobile games perform over its predecessors. XADA needed a swift dosage of severe hacking and slashing. This top notch mobile game lets you perform that task with reckless abandon.

6. Alto’s Adventure

When it came time to hop into a mobile game and fall into a more relaxing mood, Alto’s Adventure did the job. The gorgeous scenery and chill presentation of this snowboarding/skiing game usually made us fall into a trance. There was so much for us to do as we made our way through this game’s world – grinding rooftops, pulling off trick combos, saving runaway llamas etc. The soundtrack that played in the background of each stage stuck with us long after we completed all the challenges thrown our way. Alto’s Adventure presented a new take on snowboarding games that’s easy to digest for all gamers.

5. Pac-Man 256

The Pac-Man formula hasn’t aged one bit. You, your father, your little sister and even your grandmother probably love some pellet munching across all game consoles. Old school arcade fans who played the game back in the day know about the infamous Level 256 glitch. Pac-Man 256 adopts that arcade cabinet error and brings it to life in a new endless runner mobile game. The devs behind Crossy Road challenged us to keep Pac-Man alive, munch on pellets, pick up fruits and steer clear of a dangerous set of glitches. We never thought we’d sweat so furiously at the sight of some multicolored numbers and letters. Plenty of gamers (including us) had a ton of fun with this trippy take on Pac-Man’s maze traversal formula.

4. Lara Croft GO

For the retro Tomb Raider fans out there, this mobile puzzler provided you all with the Lara Croft of old. Lara Croft GO took gamers back into the lush jungles and magma filled caverns seen in the 1st line of Tomb Raider entries. Only this time, it placed everyone’s favorite treasure hunter on a top-down plane as she had to carefully move around all types of dangerous hazards. It felt great to solve stage puzzles and not get harmed by one enemy, plus we enjoyed figuring out how to cut down each boss we encountered. The lush visuals will pull you in and the amazing gameplay will keep you. We’re totally down for a sequel, Square Enix!

3. You Must Build A Boat

This pick on our list is the perfect mashup of match-three puzzlers and RPG’s. You Must Build A Boat is pretty self-explanatory when it comes to it’s concept – you start off on a small boat with only two other passengers. In order to build a much larger ship, you have to run into dungeons and pick up the supplies needed to do so. When it comes time to defeat the monsters that step in your path, the match-three puzzle gameplay pops up. Most of the fun from this game comes from getting big match combos to pull off big damage dealing attacks and successfully crafting the finest boat to ever sail the high digital seas. We’re still adding more shipmates, gear and monsters to our boat, so we’ll keep enjoying this game well into 2016.

2. Downwell

Traveling down a well doesn’t sound too exciting, right? Well, traveling down that well with a pair of Gunboots on sounds way more fun! Downwell is the ultimate twitch shooter that offers up incredibly fun procedurally generated stages. We got a heavy Mega Man mixed with Metroid vibe from this retro-stylized shooter. Downwell threw gamers into 8-bit caverns that were jam packed with all types of creatures, power ups and hidden locations filled with useful goodies. This shooter made us travel deeper and deeper into the proverbial foxhole, which is something we never thought we’d do in a mobile game like this. Blasting baddies with boots that emit lasers is just one of the many awesome activities Downwell allows everyone to do.

1. Fallout Shelter

Fallout Shelter completely caught us by surprise. When it became public at E3 2015, plenty of gamers had their reservations about a mobile Fallout game. But when it finally reached the iOS/Android games storefront and we downloaded it, all of our fears were dashed away. This building simulator gave us the tough task of maintaining our own vault. That task involved keeping our vault dwellers happy, taking down invading raiders and sending out our strongest denizens to pick up some much needed supplies. The continuous updates given to this game have made it even better since release. Fallout Shelter is the perfect post-apocalyptic SimCity we never thought we wanted until now.
