Lawyers for James Holmes, the shooter behind the infamous Aurora, Colorado, theater massacre that killed 12 people last July, are offering a guilty plea in exchange for prosecutors’ dropping the death penalty.
Holmes faces 24 counts of first-degree murder and 116 counts of attempted murder.
Prosecutors have not yet accepted the offer and may still choose to pursue the death penalty. AP reports the prosecution “would likely consult with victims and their families before deciding whether to accept the offer. Holmes’ lawyers said the case could end Monday if prosecutors accept.”
