Three Injured in Fuel Barge Explosion on the Mobile River

Three people were injured Wednesday night after two fuel barges filled with natural gas exploded on the Mobile River in Alabama, reports Fox 10.

So far there have been four explosions. The first blast went off at 8:30 p.m. and the last one happened around 9:50 p.m. on the east side of the Mobile River between the Bankhead Tunnel and the waterways.

The general manager of Ft. Conde Inn, Alan Waugh, saw the first explosion.

“We were up on a second floor balcony and the sky lit up in orange and yellow,” Waugh said. “My partner was on one end of the balcony and I was on the other. And you thought it was the Carnival cruise ship first, but then you realized it was a little further from the ship. It sounded like planes above you dropping bombs when it first went off.”

CBS News reports that three people were hospitalized with burns, but information on their current conditions is not known. Fire officials descended on the fire left from the explosions, but have decided to let the barges burn out because the area was too unstable.
