A bus crashing on a highway in Kentucky on Tuesday afternoon, sending nearly three dozen passengers to area hospitals. Here’s what you need to know.

1. The Bus Crashed on a Highway in Louisville, Kentucky

The bus was headed westbound on Interstate 64 near the Jefferson-Shelby county line in Louisville, Kentucky when it veered off the road and crashed into the median around 2:30 p.m., reports WKRG News 5.

2. It Was Carrying High School Students

The bus was carrying sophomores, juniors and staff from Waggener High School in Louisville. The students were participating in a program that gives them a chance to visit various colleges campuses. The bus, which had 42 students on board, was heading back to Louisville after visiting Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.

3. 35 Were Injured


The crash injured 35 passengers, including four adults and the bus driver. They were taken to at least five area hospitals and all were reported to be in stable condition. Four remained hospitalized Tuesday night.


4. Police are Looking into Possible Mechanical Failure


Louisville police told Wave 3 News that the bus driver lost control when the front left tire blew out. Investigators are looking into possible mechanical failure as a cause of the crash.


5. A Second Bus Carrying Students Was Not Involved in the Crash

Two buses were traveling together carrying 72 students in all. The second bus was fortunate enough to not be involved in the crash. According to Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokeswoman Andrea Clifford, however, a second crash occurred close by on the eastbound side of I-64.
