Isaac Kolstad, Victim in Brutal Attack Connected to Rutgers QB: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Isaac Kolstad, a former college football player and the father of a 3-year-old daughter, is fighting for his life as the result of an attack cops say was perpetrated by Rutgers Univeristy quarterback Phillip Nelson, who has been arrested.

Here’s what you need to know about Kolstad:


1. His Family Said He’s ‘Fighting for His Life

Kolstad’s family posted the following statement on the website CaringBridge.com, which helps families raise money to help pay medical bills of loved ones.

Isaac suffered a severe head injury early this morning. He is currently in Critical condition and fighting for his life. He is young and strong, but the battle he has in front of him is enormous. He had one surgery today to put a pressure gauge in his skull. He may need additional surgeries in the coming days. We do know that his brain did sustain permanent damage. We do not yet know to what extent and won’t for many days. He is very sick. Please pray for Isaac and all of those involved.


2. He Has a 3-Year-Old Daughter & His Wife Is Pregnant

Sam Thompson, a former teammate of Kolstad’s at Minnesota State Mankato, told the Mankato Free Press that Kolstad has a 3-year-old daughter and that Kolstad’s wife is expecting another child.


3. He Played 3 Seasons at Minnesota State Mankato

Kolstad, a linebacker, was a standout at Mankato East High School before playing three years at Minnesota State Mankato. He graduated from the university in December 2013 with a degree in management, according to the Mankato Free Press.


4. He Works in Construction

According to Kolstad’s Facebook page, he works at Fastenal, a distributor of construction equipment.


5. There’s Another Suspect Being Sought in the Attack


Police are looking for a second suspect in the attack. According to Steph Stassen, a grad student at Minnesota, a man appeared from nowhere and punched Kolstad in the face prior to being kicked. The Star Tribune reports that the other suspect is in his 20s and was wearing a red shirt with jeans. His shirt was torn as he attacked Kolstad. Witnesses say that Kolstad was unconscious after the first punch and he fell straight to the ground, not bracing his fall.
