The United States was 25 seconds from an improbable victory, a trip to the knockout round and its first 2-0 start in the World Cup in 84 years.
But Silvestre Varela had other thoughts.
Varela’s header in the 95th minute tied the game at 2 and handed Portugal a draw that kept alive Portugal’s hopes of advancing and put off a celebration for the Americans.
