Ashoka Mukpo is the NBC cameraman who has been diagnosed with the Ebola virus in Liberia. Mukpo is a native of Providence, Rhode Island. He was in West Africa working for NBC's chief medical correspondent Dr. Nancy Snyderman.
He's the son of prominent Rhode Island doctor Mitchell Levy and dressage trainer Diana Mukpo. His mother is from an English upper class family and is father is from New York. He was raised in the early years of his life by buddhist activist Chogyam Trungpa. It was Trungpa who gave his adopted son the nickname "tulku." Trungpa thought his son the reincarnation of a Tibetan teacher.
His birth father, Dr. Mitchell Levy, said that the family are "optimistic" about Mukpo's prognosis.
