The Globe and Mail reported Wednesday afternoon that Nathan Cirillo was the soldier that was killed in the Parliament building shootings this morning. A friend of Cirillo’s told CBC that he was a father, and his Instagram shows his dedication to his career, his son, and his two German shepherds.

1. He Is a 24-Year-Old Reservist from Hamilton, Ontario

Before identifying the soldier by name, sources reported that the first victim of the Ottawa parliament shootings was a reservist from Hamilton, Ontario.

He posted this Instagram picture from the Parliament buildings five months ago.


2. He Was Shot at the War Memorial

The shooting at the War Memorial was reported as occurring at 9.52 am. The gunman shot Cpl. Cirillo and then ran toward the Parliament buildings.


3. He Was Declared Dead at a Nearby Hospital

He was taken to a nearby hospital after the shooting, where he was declared dead.

In an official statement from Ottawa Police, they confirmed that the soldier who had been shot had died.
