President Obama has announced that Merrick Garland, currently the chief judge of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, is his pick to replace Antonin Scalia. Twitter immediately trended with “Merrick Garland Jew.”
In his speech after his introduction by President Obama at the announcement of his nomination, Garland confirmed his Jewish descent by telling the story of his family’s arrival to the United States after fleeing anti-Semitism in Russia.
The Twitter trend seemed to be foddered by mostly white nationalists and other anti-Semitic extremists, complaining that Garland would be the fourth person of Jewish descent on the United States Supreme Court now.
